0U.S. Olympian Ryan Murphy On This Year’s Summer Olympics In Tokyo, Working With Bridgestone, Music, Football, Food & More
The Tokyo Games are less than 3 months away and some of the most exciting events always happen in the pool. 3-time Olympic Gold Medal swimmer Ryan Murphy is hoping to mine more gold for Team USA. Murphy knows first-hand what America’s team will be up against, but before he goes, he is helping spread the word about Summer safety for all of us — both in the water and on the road.
Ryan Murphy started breaking records as soon as he started swimming at age 5 and has quickly emerged as one of the biggest stars in the sport. While at the University of California, Berkeley, he swept both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events at the NCAA Championships for 4 straight years. Murphy owns American records in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke, 50-meter backstroke, 100-meter backstroke and 50 short course meters backstroke. In his Olympic Games debut at Rio 2016, Murphy won 3 gold medals. Murphy swept the backstroke events at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, won 6 medals (3 gold and 3 silver) at the 2018 Swimming World Championships in Hangzhou, China, and was named the 2018 Male Athlete of the Year by USA Swimming at its annual Golden Goggle Awards. The 24-year-old aims to become the first American to sweep the backstroke events at 2 different Olympic Games, and looks likely to do just that.
On May 18, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ryan Murphy via Zoom, as embedded below. We spoke about this year’s Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Murphy’s earlier-mentioned safety goals — as reinforced via his partnership with Bridgestone — the music he listens to, the food he prefers, and which sport is his second favorite behind swimming. More on Murphy is here, here, here and here.
