Crash Land: A Review

A true sign of artistry is the ability to take real life experience and translate it into art. That’s all art really is anyways. LA based music artist Wingman has taken a unique and terrifying experience and turned it into a catchy, summer banger. After all, taking a dangerous emergency helicopter landing and turning it into a catchy pop/trap single is no small feat. With pristine production, catchy melodies, and true-life storytelling, Wingman has concocted a flawless mix of all the things that make a song both substantial and fun.

The song itself starts off in high gear with a trap beat mixed with an uplifting chord progression a-la piano and a pulsating bass. Wingman’s true story lyrics, which are subtle enough and have the kind of multifaceted meaning to make the song very relatable, are delivered via Wingman’s signature sing-song style that is reminiscent of Drake or Post Malone. The chorus kicks in with the addition of a bit of EDM flare. The song’s aura conjures up dreams of a midnight drive down the California coast or a house party in Calabasas, as the song itself is both easy going and energetic. I believe these two factors give the track enough substance and stamina to stand the test of time and make for an enjoyable listen time and time again.

The song was inspired by a real-life situation wherein Wingman and his cameraman, Matt Trainor, were forced to perform an emergency landing during a flight in Wingman’s helicopter. They were shooting a music video for a different song and ended up with some compelling footage for what would end up being “Crash Land.” The music video is a perfect companion to the song as it features actual footage of the emergency landing and the rescue efforts. There is also a healthy amount of Wingman vibing in the desert while searching for enough signal to phone for help. The song and video are lighthearted enough that it is easy to forget how scary a situation like an emergency landing can be. Lord knows that too many musicians have passed on way too early from flight related incidents. Thankfully, that was not the case in this situation. Wingman already has a sterling discography in the making and this single will make for a perfect addition to that legacy.

“Crash Land” has personality, soul and plenty of movement inducing rhythm. None of this is surprising when one looks at Wingman’s history of providing catchy, danceable music. With a continuously growing fanbase and steadily growing streams, there is nowhere to go but up for this budding star. When all is said and done, there are no crash landing in sight for Wingman’s career as it continues to ascend. Just like Wingman’s trajected career path, “Crash Land” has already ascended to the top of my daily playlist where it will likely stay for weeks to come. This single gets an easy five stars from me, and I can’t wait to hear more music in this vein from Wingman.
