0Ep. 1 of MOGUL Explores How Hip Hop Legend DJ Screw Became Obsessed With the Music Before His DJ Days
The all new season of Spotify/Gimlet’s “Mogul,” which focuses on hip hop pioneer DJ Screw, returns today! You can check out the first episode below.
The hit podcast is all about hip hop’s most iconic moments, told by the people who lived them, and this season, host, journalist and DJ Brandon “Jinx” Jenkins transports us to the ‘90s in Houston for a look inside the life of hip hop legend DJ Screw.
Episode one, out today, introduces Screw and his days growing up in rural Texas where his obsession with music took flight, teaching himself how to DJ and perfecting his craft before moving to Houston in the ‘90s and creating a sound that would later define the city.
Artists like Travis Scott, Solange, Megan Thee Stallion, Beyonce and Drake have all been directly influenced by Screw and that hazy, psychedelic hip hop sound that he perfected more than 20 years ago. Over the course of six episodes, fans will get to know the man behind the sound through firsthand, never-before-heard stories from those who worked with him and knew him best.
Throughout the season, we’ll hear from artists like Yungstar, Paul Wall, Bun B, Lil Flip, and Lil Keke who tell their stories and accounts with Screw in exclusive interviews.
