Earlier this month, Universal Attractions Agency announced that it will bring the I Love The 90’s Tour back to select stages this summer. Featuring headliner Vanilla Ice, the tour — which kicks off on August 12, 2021 in South Bend, Indiana at Four Winds Field — will additionally host a revolving lineup of 1990s hit-makers, including Rob Base, Kid ‘n Play, Naughty By Nature, Coolio, Young MC, All-4-One, C+C Music Factory feat. Freedom Williams, Tone Loc, Sir Mix-A-lot and Tag Team. Per Jeff Allen, co-owner of Universal Attractions and co-creator of the tour: “Dates are being added as we speak, not only this summer but well into 2022.” Additional cities with announced upcoming tour dates include Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, San Diego, Toledo, Youngstown, Cincinnati and Springfield.
This is the latest edition of the blockbuster throwback tour, which launched in 2016 and was “an instant hit” according to Rolling Stone. The tour has been highlighted on a myriad of other major media outlets over the years including a Today Show takeover 2 years in a row, Pitbull’s New Year’s Eve on Fox and Good Morning America. The concept also held a Las Vegas residency, and over 300 tour dates, landing it on the top-grossing tours list in 2016 compiled by music industry bible Pollstar Magazine.

The aforementioned Young MC first found success in the late 1980s via his debut album Stone Cold Rhymin’, which featured the hits “Bust A Move” and “Principal’s Office.” Around that time, Young MC also found massive success via co-writing “Wild Thing” and “Funky Cold Medina,” as recorded by Tone Loc. In the years to come, Young MC continued recording — 1991’s Brainstorm was RIAA Gold-certified — and collaborating with other artists, as his credits also include Anastacia, Mest and KRS-One. Simply put, Young MC is in rare company as a winner of GRAMMY, Billboard and American Music Awards.
On June 17, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Young MC via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond the I Love The 90’s Tour, we spoke about his initial success while studying Economics at USC, how he wound up collaborating with the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea on “Bust A Move,” writing for Tone Loc and other artists over the years, the early days of sampling in hip-hop, calling his own shots as a businessman, his New York roots, future plans and more.
