Billy Duffy On “COLOURSØUND II,” Working With Mike Peters, Future Plans For The Cult & More

COLOURSØUND II is the brand new album from the alt-rock songwriting project created by Billy Duffy of The Cult and Mike Peters of The Alarm. Set for release on July 16, 2021, COLOURSØUND II is a record of raw power, closing a gap of twenty years between the first and second COLOURSØUND full-lengths. The COLOURSØUND partnership of Duffy and Peters was originally forged in 1997 when neither were aligned to the groups they continue to be equally-synonymous with, yet by the time the duo had written and released the first COLOURSØUND album in 1999, both Duffy and Peters had returned to fly their banners with The Cult (then re-signed to Atlantic Records) and The Alarm respectively.

Fast forward to 2019, Billy Duffy sent Mike Peters a guitar riff via email that immediately triggered a choral response. Within weeks, the pair had located to a beach cottage in a remote part of the North Wales coastline to write again. By the raging winter sea shore, that first moment of creativity became the opening song of COLOURSØUND II. COLOURSØUND II was ultimately recorded between the lockdowns at the Chapel Studio in Lincolnshire with bass player George Williams and Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros drummer Smiley making up the rhythm section. The album — as available digitally, on CD and as a Studio Edition Limited Colour Vinyl — was also produced by the aforementioned Williams.

Beyond COLOURSØUND and The Cult, Billy Duffy has been working virtually nonstop since the late 1970s. Duffy has played in Kings Of Chaos (alongside members of Guns ‘N’ Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Cheap Trick and ZZ Top) and Circus Diablo. In turn, Duffy has sold millions of albums between these acts, and always has a big catalog to pull on the road. An influential guitarist in his own right, Duffy is in rare company in having has his own signature Gretsch White Falcon model guitar.

On May 25, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Billy Duffy via Zoom, as embedded below. More on Duffy and COLOURSØUND can be found by clicking here, here, here and here.
