0Seán Devlin 叶 世民 On His New Album “Animals, Airports,” Comedy Philosophy, Working On The “Borat” Sequel & More
Filipino-Chinese-Canadian comedian, filmmaker and prankster Seán Devlin (叶 世民) is releasing his debut stand-up album Airports, Animals today, July 9, 2021. The album is the first comedy release from Canada’s beloved indie music label Arts & Crafts, home to Broken Social Scene and Feist. Devlin was a consulting producer on last year’s Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm, the writer/director behind the award-winning film When The Storm Fades, and has a storied history of political activism in Canada, including work with Sh*t Harper Did; Devlin is credited as one of the co-founders of Sh*t Harper Did.
Seán Devlin’s unassumingly-calm material, as featured on Airports, Animals, often comes from real-world interventions and politically-charged personal confrontations. Among the topics Devlin covers on the album are legal weed in Canada, going to the movies high, talking to racists, how he experiences both anti-Asian racism and white privilege, Chef Wolfgang Puck serving food with Hepatitis A in it, why there are monkeys at the Vancouver Aquarium, and learning “OPP” did not stand for the Ontario Provincial Police. In other words, Devlin is a tremendous storyteller who shares deep thoughts that often turn out to be funny, rather than dishing out impersonal one-liners.
On July 7, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Seán Devlin via Zoom, as embedded below. More on Devlin and Airports, Animals can be found by clicking here, here, here and/or here.
