John 5 On His New “SINNER” Album, Working With David Lee Roth, Creativity, TV & More

John 5 first came into the big time as one of Marilyn Manson’s guitarists in 1998. But prior to playing with Marilyn Manson, the virtuoso had played alongside Van Halen’s David Lee Roth, Judas Priest‘s Rob Halford, and Grammy-winning singer/songwriter k.d. lang. After leaving the Manson band in 2004, John 5 moved on to playing with Rob Zombie — who he still plays with — and properly launched his solo career. In the midst of all that touring and recording, John 5 was somehow also able to make time with writing and/or recording with Rod Stewart, Ricky Martin, Garbage, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Meat Loaf, Alice Cooper, and The Scorpions, showing his ability to play nearly any style of music.

SINNER is the latest solo album from John 5, as due out on October 29, 2021 — just in time for Halloween — via Big Machine Records. Prior to its release SINNER, which is John 5’s first new music since 2019, had made headlines via its single “Que Pasa” featuring the vocal stylings of GRAMMY-winning Megadeth leader Dave Mustaine and the album-closing “Georgia On My Mind” including a rare appearance by KISS co-founder Peter Criss. All the while, John 5 has been in the news over the last year for co-founding the new all-star band L.A. Rats (alongside Zombie, Nikki Sixx and Tommy Clueftos), taking part in the “State Of Guitar In 2021” all-star summit of Guitar World, and having some long-shelved studio recordings alongside David Lee Roth finally getting released to the public.

On October 27, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with John 5 via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond SINNER, we spoke about John 5’s long-term friendship and working relationship with David Lee Roth, how he is able to juggle so many projects at once, how he stays creative, and what he has been watching on television as of late. More on John 5 and SINNER can be found here, here, here and here.
