Isaiah Mitchell On The New Earthless Album, Touring With The Black Crowes, Van Halen & More

Earthless — a San Diego-based psych rock power trio comprised of Isaiah Mitchell (guitar & vocals), Mike Eginton (bass) and Mario Rubalcaba (drums) — has a long-awaited new album hitting stores this week. Due out on January 28, 2022 via the Nuclear Blast label, Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons was recorded with Rubalcaba’s childhood friend Ben Moore, whose credits also include Diamanda Galas, Burt Bacharach, Ceremony, and Hot Snakes. The band’s sixth album is composed of two monster songs, its 41-minute title track and the 20-minute “Death To The Red Sun.” When Eginton wasn’t tracking his bass parts, he worked on the sleeve art for Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons.

Night Parade Of One Hundred Demons is a return to the epic instrumentals Earthless made its unmistakable name on, whereas 2018’s Black Heaven featured shorter songs and vocals from guitarist Isaiah Mitchell on much of the album. Black Heaven was recorded while Mitchell was living in the Bay Area, which had made it difficult for the band to get together and work on the type of long instrumental pieces they have been known for. But in March 2020 — specifically, the night the pandemic lockdown kicked in — Mitchell moved back to San Diego from the Bay Area. Said COVID-19 pandemic also postponed some of Mitchell’s touring as a guitarist for The Black Crowes, and unfortunately this week postponed the next batch of United States tour dates for Earthless.

On January 26, 2022, I had the pleasure of speaking with Isaiah Mitchell via Zoom, as embedded below. More on Mitchell and Earthless can be found online by clicking here, here and here.
