0S.W. Lauden, Nada Surf’s Ira Elliot & THICK’s Shari Page On “Forbidden Beat: Perspectives On Punk Drumming” & Plenty More
In late 2021, I spoke with Paul Myers and S.W. Lauden about Go All The Way, a book curated by Myers and Lauden which featured top-tier writers and acclaimed writers going deep on what certain Power Pop bands and songs mean and have meant to them. Within the course of that conversation, Lauden — also the author of the Greg Salem punk rock P.I. series and Tommy & Shayna — mentioned his then-forthcoming book Forbidden Beat: Perspectives On Punk Drumming. In comparable format to Go All The Way, Forbidden Beat featured top-tier drummers talking about punk rock drumming in a fun and inspiring way. The book’s main subject is not far from the wheelhouse of Lauden, “S.W. Lauden” is of course the pen name of Steve Coulter, drummer for Tsar, The Brothers Steve and Ridel High.
On March 6, 2022, I had the pleasure of speaking with S.W. Lauden via Zoom alongside Nada Surf drummer Ira Elliot and THICK drummer Shari Page via Zoom. Both Elliot and Page were key contributors to Forbidden Beat: Perspectives On Punk Drumming, and both turned out to not only be excellent drummers who can write, yet also encyclopedic interview subjects who can tell you plenty about the history of rock drumming. That full conversation, as spotlighted by the Long Beach Public Library’s “Meet The Music Makers” series, is embedded below for your viewing pleasure. Towards the end of the chat, we also discussed everyone’s current and upcoming projects beyond Forbidden Beat.
More on Lauden amnd his books can be found here and here. Tour dates and other information related to Nada Surf’s Ira Elliot — whose credits also include The Fuzztones, Ric Ocasek and Bambi Kino — can be found here, while more on Shari Page and THICK can be viewed here and here.
