Merging Hip-Hop and Fashion With Kris Shelby

From the Roman era to the middle ages, the renaissance period, and the beginnings of modern fashion design, It’s no secret that culture has always been a major influence when it comes to setting the hottest trends in fashion. While the first sewing machine was invented in 1790, the first designs in fashion hadn’t emerged until 1826. So what makes today’s fashion style unique? It’s rather simple. According to celebrity stylist Kris Shelby, style is a life… style. “It’s more than just clothing. Style is personality. It’s a combination of your favorite places, your home decor, anything that has “some type of art to it” and self-expression”.

Kris, originally from New Orleans, discovered his interest in fashion at a very young age. He has worked for world-renowned luxury retailers such as Louis Vuitton, Saks Fifth Ave, and Polo Ralph Lauren. It’s no surprise that Kris’ creative eye and unique style has managed to catch the attention of countless a-list celebrities. As a celebrity stylist, he has managed to hit the ground running and generate waves in a major way while creating his own lane. From styling 4x platinum record “Bad and Boujee” video with Migos to receiving his first certified plaque for his work on YFN Lucci’s “Wet” video, it’s safe to say that he is fearlessly revolutionizing the way artists and creatives express themselves through fashion.

We had the opportunity to sit down with Kris and discuss his journey as a stylist, what it’s been like working with some of his celebrity clients, and his visions for the future. This is what he had to say when talking about styling his client Young Jeezy, and his experience at this year’s Dreamville festival:  “I used to be a rapper back in the day, being on that stage seeing 50,000 people across the lawn, I remember that time I wanted to get to this place in my life, and now I’m here with this same vision and another career. You can’t force God’s work, you just gotta go with it. I didn’t see myself being a stylist, I just didn’t. God had another plan for me. I was so excited for Jeezy and all the love he was getting! I can only imagine [what it’s like] for him after being in the game for so long and just feeling that love coming from the crowd, I always ask him “Bro how do you feel every time you step on that stage”, he was like, “Every time I walk out there, it’s like my very first time again”. J is like a brother to me. It was beautiful and such an amazing feeling”.

Many of us have the opportunity to see some of our favorite celebrities grace some of the most prestigious red carpets around the world, wearing incredible one-of-a-kind designs and iconic archival jewelry pieces, many of which become largely memorable and recognizable throughout many generations. But how often do we stop to recognize the incredibly talented creatives behind these evocative moments in fashion? Astoundingly, not many. As powerful as their work is, it makes me wonder why their voices aren’t magnified more often. Why hasn’t anyone created an “iconic stylist” award yet?

Kris Shelby, is a stylist and creative that truly embodies the expression “bringing art to life”. His humility and undeniable ability to connect and uplift others, while continuing to share his knowledge in the business, is an incredibly admirable trait. This is just the beginning of what will be a long and prosperous career for this talented art enthusiast and free spirit. In Kris’ words, “let time and God be the steering wheel of your journey”.
