Dr. Dre reaches new audiences via GTA

Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, perhaps embodies more than most rappers how it is possible to move successfully into other areas of the entertainment industry and remain in the public consciousness. His latest coup is to introduce his music to a new audience via the Grand Theft Auto video game.

The rapper, formerly a member of N.W.A, alongside Eazy-E, Arabian Prince, MC Ren, Ice Cube, and DJ Yella, not only released his successful album entitled The Chronic with Death Row Records, but he also brought a number of rappers to the game including Snoop Dogg, the Lady of Rage, and Nate Dogg.

A Video Game Star

The tentacles of hip hop have now reached into almost all areas of modern culture and entertainment and Dre plays a big role in this. Dr. Dre has become a cultural phenomenon in the video game industry after appearing in the Grand Theft Auto Online expansion The Contract: Dr. Dre.

The mission involves finding lost tracks by Dre and players are rewarded with a selection of songs including Diamond Mind (feat. Nipsey Hussle and Ty Dolla $ign) and ETA (feat. Anderson .Paak, Busta Rhymes & Snoop Dogg). Hip hop has also inspired slot games in the iGaming industry, with titles such as Hip Hop Panda. These titles give rap fans the opportunity to have fun when taking part in online gambling by capitalizing on the popularity of the music genre.

The First Rap Billionaire

Recognizing the power of working behind the scenes for successful artists, he produced Snoop Dogg’s debut album Doggystyle and after founding Aftermath Entertainment, he produced three songs on Eminem’s The Slim Shady LP. But it was when he co-founded the company Beats Electronics that he really cemented his place as the top rap entrepreneur.

His Beats headphones became a must-have amongst music fans and Beats Music tapped into the boom in streaming services. Apple purchased both companies for $3 billion, putting Dre at the top of the rap earners, placing him ahead of Jay-Z and Kanye West, who recently terminated the contract between his fashion company Yeezy and Gap.

Rappers in TV and Film

As many former rappers have made the transformation to the TV and movie industry, such as his former bandmate Ice Cube, his protégé Eminem and Ice-T, it is no surprise to see Dre getting in on the act, appearing in movies such as Training Day, which starred Denzel Washington. He reunited with Ice Cube to co-produce the 2015 N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton.

Dre’s acclaimed performance at the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show, alongside Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Mary J. Blige, won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) in 2022 and cemented his position as a rap god.

Dre has constantly demonstrated his ability to shape modern culture through his music, so his appearance in GTA Online is the logical step in a career of a rapper who instinctively knows how to be at the cutting edge of technology in modern entertainment.
