At a book signing event in Los Angeles for Army veterans, advocates, and authors, Shanell Matlock and Amarin Trichanh, two of the contributors for the national and international bestseller Veterans Unchained, met and spoke with The Hype Magazine CEO/Publisher Dr. Jameelah ‘Just Jay’ Wilkerson about their participation in the book and their individual stories of trial and triumph. Each of them shares a story of abuse and coverup within the ranks that highlights the systemic disregard for abuse victims within the military, the fallout, and the strength it takes to tell a world that doesn’t want to hear about or acknowledge these types of issues.

The problem of sexual assault and abuse of women in the military has been getting a lot of attention lately. There are a number of reasons for this, but the most important one is that it is finally being taken seriously by the powers that be.

For far too long, this issue was swept under the rug and treated as not being a big deal. This was a huge mistake, and it allowed the problem to fester and grow. Now, finally, steps are being taken to address the issue in a serious and meaningful way.

Veterans Unchained is a series of books written by military service members or their partners addressing issues related to combat, trauma, isolation, addiction, suicide, and more. The stated intent of these books is “…to provide a healing process for our military and Veteran community at large.” This project supports the Veteran nonprofit Rugged Warrior Healing Coalition.

Matlock and Trichanh are also authors of their own individual book projects. Each tells their stories about their military service and the abuse that occurred to them as is the growing case within the branches. Their stories are also ones of triumph as these warriors beat the odds by not simply accepting that they deserved this treatment, spoke out, did the work to ensure their recovery, and share their tools and resources as inspiration for others to speak out and work on healing.

Sexual assault and abuse of women in the military is a serious problem that has been allowed to persist for far too long. However, thanks to increased awareness and action from both inside and outside the military community, we are finally starting to see some real progress being made on this issue. With any luck, these steps will lead to lasting change and ensure that women in the military can serve without worrying about becoming victims of these heinous crimes.
