Chicago’s KAMI returns this September with his highly-anticipated album, IT’S OK, LOVERRR.
KAMI’s versatile rap prowess takes listeners on a journey across genres as he seamlessly combines euphoric synths and rap with polished pop.
The title track, a dreamy synth-driven record, announces the album as a departure from his singles and collaborations with the likes of his “SAVEMONEY counterparts Chance the Rapper, Vic Mensa, etc.” of the past few years — often fun, braggadocious tracks that bring to mind basketball highlight reels and teen hype beasts moshing — and a return to the experimentation felt in his first full-length solo-album JUST LIKE THE MOVIES (2017).
KAMI proves himself a student of world music and dance music enthusiast, embracing an ultimate soundtrack to falling in love, or often, infatuation, and being utterly consumed by it. The euphoric tracks — ITS OK LOVERRR, CALLING YOU (feat. Knox Fortune), & OUTSIDE — invite the listeners to move their bodies with abandon, despite the darker lyrics on navigating guilt, pressure, and moving on autopilot through regrettable habits. KAMI Bio:
As a founding member of the SAVEMONEY collective, Chicago artist KAMI, began performing in the early 2010s and has become known for his blackout delivery, malleability, and candid lyricism
Alongside artists like Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa, KAMI was an integral part of the SAVEMONEY collective and explored the experimental and genre-less sides of hip-hop culture. and saw fellow SAVEMONEY members like Chance the Rapper and VIC MENSA rise to enormous stardom. KAMI is half of the duo, Leather Corduroys, with his SAVEMONEY brother, Joey Purp.
KAMI released his first album, “Just Like the Movies” in 2017, which the Chicago Reader hailed as having “sound big enough for an IMAX screen.” He followed that with the five-song EP Superstar, which featured the legendary Chicago anthem “PAYLOAD.” In 2018, KAMI released a joint album with Grammy-nominated producer Smoko Ono, titled “Very Slight”. The album features the smash hit Reboot with Chance. While the COVID-19 pandemic derailed plans KAMI had for touring and another album, KAMI is scheduled to release his next project “IT’S OK LOVERRR” this upcoming September 2023.
In addition to creating and releasing his latest project, KAMI has also created a documentary titled “Pressure” – the unfolding story of KAMI which serves as a pilot for an episodic series. The documentary juxtaposes artists from around the world, with Accra Ghana being the first place. KAMI performing at the Black Star Line Festival created by Chance the Rapper & Vic Mensa. Headliners included Erykah Badu, T-Pain, and other artists from Accra, Ghana with an audience of 50,000 people. A culmination of KAMI’S discography will be featured throughout the documentary.
