Understanding the ins and outs of a live Roulette game

When it comes to classic casino games there are few as iconic as Roulette. The spinning wheel has been a staple of casinos for centuries, even before the founding of the famous Monte Carlo casino.

A more recent development for Roulette is the live game format. These combine live dealers with an online player interface, allowing for a fusion between the land-based and online casino experiences. Whether you’re a Roulette veteran or you only play Slots, let’s take a look at how a game of live Roulette works.

The basics of Roulette

At its core, Roulette is a very simple game. Players wager on which of the wheel’s pockets a ball will land in, with options to wager on individual numbers as well as broader categories.

Once every player at the table has made their wager, the croupier spins the wheel and then spins the ball around its rim in the opposite direction. As they both spin the ball will roll and bounce, before losing momentum and coming to a stop in one of the various numbered pockets.

There are three major categories of Roulette, which determine the layout of the wheel and some key rules. European and French Roulette wheels feature only a single zero pocket, whereas the American Roulette wheel has both a single and double zero.

How a game of live Roulette works

Unlike other online Roulette varieties, live Roulette features a live dealer who oversees a physical table. This makes the live format closer to the land-based Roulette experience, rather than the digital versions based entirely on random number generators (RNG).

Depending on when a player joins the game instance, they may have to wait for the current round of play to end. Live Roulette games run on a strict timer, with players only having a set time to make their wagers before play begins.

Once the timers for wagers is up, the croupier will announce this and spin the wheel. As live Roulette games feature multiple cameras, players can choose which angle they wish to focus on as they wait for the outcome of the spin.

When the ball eventually comes to a stop the croupier will call the result, before moving the physical chips on the betting layout as necessary and resetting the table. The computer behind the scenes will make sure any payouts are made to players.

Understanding Roulette bets

Before you join a game of live Roulette it’s important to understand the wagering options available t players. These are divided into two types in a game of Roulette, known as inside and outside bets.

Inside bets are placed on a specific number or small grouping of adjacent numbers on the betting layout. These include a straight up (single number wager), a split (a two number wager) and a line (a bet on two adjacent rows of three).

An outside bet covers a larger grouping of numbers by characteristics, such as red/black, odd/even or high/low. These sit around the outside of the betting layout – hence their name – and typically offer a lower payout than an inside bet.

Before playing a game of live Roulette, consider the relative odds of the game variety in play. Once you’ve got the basics of a game down, you can work on understanding the greater details of Roulette odds and wagers.
