CA Coalition for Black Birth Justice Hosts “Birth Justice & Joy” Event to Advance Birth Equity

The California Coalition for Black Birth Justice (CCBBJ) recently hosted a pivotal event at the Grass Room in downtown Los Angeles, dedicated to advancing birth justice and addressing racial disparities in maternal health outcomes. The evening, themed “Birth Justice & Joy,” brought together birth justice leaders, advocates, and partners for a night of soulful celebration and collaboration.

This exclusive event was a unique gathering of key stakeholders in the birth justice movement, including representatives from influential organizations such as the office of Senator Steven Bradford, First 5 Los Angeles, the Weingart Foundation, Essential Access Health, and The California Endowment. These distinguished guests underscored the significant impact and broad support CCBBJ has garnered in its mission to advance equity and justice across California.

The event highlighted CCBBJ’s strategic agenda, “Unifying the Vision for Systemic Change,” which focuses on actionable solutions to address the persistent racial inequities in perinatal outcomes for Black birthing families. Attendees engaged in meaningful discussions on how to coordinate and accelerate birth justice strategies statewide, fostering a unified approach to systemic change.

Catering was provided by acclaimed Chef Q @chefism, ensuring a menu that resonated with the soulful theme of the evening. Event production support was expertly managed by LOOP, and attendees enjoyed a luxury photo booth experience courtesy of GIF CUBE, adding an interactive and memorable touch to the night.

“We are committed to unifying and strengthening the Black birth justice movement in California and nationally,” said Dana Sherrod, Co-Founder and Executive Director of CCBBJ, who was honored with a proclamation from Senator Bradford’s office during the presentation. “This event not only celebrated the progress we’ve made but also solidified our collective commitment to driving meaningful change in healthcare for Black mothers and infants.”

The evening featured live music, mocktails, and networking opportunities, creating a vibrant atmosphere for collaboration and community building. The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of collective action in the fight for birth justice and the well-being of Black families.
