Fantom of the Beat Drops New Single ‘Grind Mode’ feat. Rhymercka Ahead of Fall 2024 EP “Fantom Certified”

Fantom of the Beat, aka Haas G, a renowned name in the Hip Hop industry, is gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated EP “Fantom Certified“, slated for fall 2024. The Staten Island artist, who rose to fame as part of the iconic 90s duo The UMC’s, has just released his new single “Grind Mode,” featuring Rhymercka, offering fans a taste of what’s to come.

The Legacy of The UMC’s

Formed in Staten Island in 1991, The UMC’s—short for both “The Undisputed Masters of Charisma” and “Unleash My Culture”—became key players in Hip Hop’s Golden Age. Their debut album, “Fruits of Nature“, quickly garnered attention, with singles like “Blue Cheese” topping the Billboard Hot Rap chart and “One to Grow On” securing the number two spot. These successes cemented their place in music history, with their unique blend of soulful beats and lyrical prowess.

After the release of their sophomore album “Unleashed” in 1993, The UMC’s parted ways, with Haas G transitioning into a new chapter of his career as a producer. Under the moniker Fantom of the Beat, he crafted hits for various artists, including Lil’ Kim’s chart-topping single “Magic Stick” featuring 50 Cent. The track peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, became a top 10 hit on the Billboard Rap Chart, and earned a GRAMMY Nomination for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group at the 46th GRAMMY Awards.

Fantom Certified: A Return to Substance

With his new EP “Fantom Certified“, Fantom of the Beat is returning to the forefront of music production, blending the gritty sounds of the late 1960s and 1970s with modern Hip Hop. The EP, which contains six tracks, is a reflection of his evolution as a producer and a statement on the current state of the Hip Hop industry.

“The EP is about substance. It is genuine. It is about diversity and there are topics,” Fantom explains. His latest single, “Grind Mode,” exemplifies this ethos, featuring hard-hitting street lyrics from Rhymercka, set against Fantom’s signature production style. “The track is heat for the street and Fantom Certified,” he adds.

Protecting Hip Hop’s Culture

Fantom’s musical journey also speaks to his deep commitment to preserving the essence of Hip Hop. As the industry becomes increasingly saturated with AI-generated music and formulaic content, he emphasizes the importance of maintaining authenticity.

“Back in the day, rappers were teachers. We were soothsayers and we were helping kids who didn’t have anyone,” ~ Fantom.

The UMC’s alternate name, Unleash My Culture, continues to resonate with Fantom as he aims to instill integrity and purpose into modern Hip Hop.

“I want to instill my integrity into the culture. I want it to blossom and move in the right direction. Usually, it’s the one behind the scenes who’s calling the shots, the producer who’s developing the plan,” he reflects.

Speaking of “Back in tha Day”, Fantom is heavily featured in the hit three-part documentary series “The Culture of Hip Hop: The Staten Island Story” which we covered separately here in multiple features and a Live Session interview with creators/directors Carl June and Luis Libran as well.

Looking Ahead

As Fantom Certified gears up for release, Fantom remains committed to championing originality and creativity. “There is nothing that’s artificial in the music,” he states. For Fantom, the EP is more than just a collection of tracks; it’s a call to action for artists and listeners alike to protect and preserve the culture of Hip Hop.

“If we don’t stand up for that now, Hip Hop will be drowned out—not only by the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) but by the constant stream of music that is available, and nothing will be original,” he warns.

Fans of Fantom of the Beat and The UMC’s can expect Fantom Certified to deliver a powerful, thought-provoking listening experience, further solidifying his legendary status in the world of Hip Hop. The Staten Island music legend continues to champion authenticity in Hip Hop.
