In this exclusive interview, I talk to Boney James about his new album “Slow Burn”, his collaboration with October London, and his enduring passion for jazz and R&B after 19 albums. Read more about his creative journey and tour life.

Sitting down with the legendary saxophonist Boney James was a true full-circle moment for me. With nearly three decades in the industry and 19 albums under his belt, Boney shared insights about his latest project, “Slow Burn“, his journey in music, and what continues to drive his passion for jazz and R&B.

Let’s say…bucket list interview completed…and thus I do not promise the following is written with journalistic neutrality!  Please have fun with the full #livesession below this recap!

Inside “Slow Burn” and the October London Collaboration

Talking to Boney about his latest single, “All I Want Is You” featuring October London, I immediately sensed how much care he puts into his collaborations. “October’s voice gave me that Marvin Gaye vibe,” Boney told me. “That’s what drew me to him, and I knew I had to work with him.”

We also got into the album’s title, “Slow Burn“. Boney explained that the phrase came to him naturally as he listened to the groove of the title track. He described it as music that builds with a slow, deliberate intensity. It was fascinating to hear him talk about how the concept evolved, rather than starting with a grand plan—it all grew from the music itself…the fact that he looked up the term, as he explains in our conversation, made my head spin at the detailed thought behind the title…take a listen to the new album below!

Reflecting on a Lifetime in Jazz: Boney’s Creative Evolution

As a fan, I had to ask him about his journey in music. Boney told me about picking up the saxophone at the age of 10 but not initially seeing it as a career. He smiled as he recalled the benchmark moment that changed everything—playing with friends during a college break and realizing that performing live gave him a feeling nothing else could.

I also asked if he still enjoys listening to music like a fan, Boney admitted it’s not easy to turn off his analytical side. “But when I’m making my own music, that’s when I can really feel it, like a listener,” he explained. It’s clear how much he values the emotional connection music brings, both for himself and his fans.

The Magic of Performing Live: “Every Night Is Different”

As someone who’s been following Boney’s career, I was excited to hear him talk about his live performances. He shared how each show is unique. “Every crowd is different,” he tells me, “and that’s what keeps it exciting.” I couldn’t help but mention that I’d be catching his show at Kansas City’s Uptown Theater, and we both shared a laugh about it.

Blending Jazz and R&B: Creating a Musical Bridge

Boney’s music has always felt like a bridge between genres for me, seamlessly blending jazz and R&B. I told him how his melodies connect people in a way that few artists can. He laughed as he recalled a fan letter from a couple who said they had great intimate moments to his music—proof of how deeply his music resonates with listeners in unexpected ways…ijs.

Navigating the Streaming Era and Embracing the Future

The conversation naturally shifted to how much the music industry has changed. I asked Boney how he felt about streaming, and he admitted that while the business has evolved, he appreciates how easily people can access his entire discography. “It’s great to see how people are still discovering my older albums,” he said, acknowledging that streaming has opened new doors for artists like him.

Fans and Career Highlights: A Personal Connection

I wanted to know if Boney had any standout moments with fans over the years. He smiled and told me he often hears from people about how his music has helped them through tough times, and that feedback means the world to him. It’s clear that his connection with his audience is as important to him as the music itself.

Wrapping Up: Boney’s Commitment to His Craft

As we wrapped up our conversation, I thanked Boney for his incredible contributions to music and for taking the time to talk. We joked about how attending his concert might earn me some brownie points, and he reminded me that at the end of the day, music is meant to be enjoyed.

With “Slow Burn” and a tour in full swing, Boney James is still doing what he loves—creating timeless music that connects deeply with fans old and new.
