Bluffing in Love and Cards: How Poker Face by Lady Gaga Redefines Emotional Masks

Arguably one of the hits that helped her to achieve global stardom, Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” is a song that uses the game as a metaphor when describing emotions. It’s used as a means of giving listeners an alternative way in which vulnerability within relationships is highlighted.

Released in 2008, the song went on to achieve success in many markets worldwide. It’s one of the world’s best-selling single’s of all time, having gone on to achieve almost 10 million sales in 2009 alone. Unsurprisingly, it had managed to top the charts in 20 countries, including the US, UK, and New Zealand.

Poker’s popularity in media

It also topped the Australian chart, which perhaps isn’t surprising given the nation’s affinity for gambling. While listeners would have enjoyed the beat, the lyrics and its representation of poker, it’s likely many would have been attracted by the title before even hearing what it sounded like. Many continually seek the best sites where they can play Australian online pokies and online poker freely, and with the song’s content matching the activity, it may have been a song that many listen to when playing.

Of course, the poker theme isn’t just something that Australians enjoy. It’s a theme that has been widely revered across many cultures. So much so, that we’ve seen it be used in many other forms of entertainment media. For Gaga, she perhaps capitalized on a topic that most know about and has managed to use it in a way to convey a different message.

There have been many songs that have been written and sung about the game and its various concepts. Kenny Rodgers sang about the game in “The Gambler” and how a player should know when to keep or throw away certain cards. O.A.R. had a hit song called “That Was A Crazy Game of Poker”, with lyrics that referred to various aspects of the game.

However, it seems Gaga managed to do something with it that others may not have done: use the game as a way to convey emotions. Despite continuing to write and release new music, it’s perhaps why this track has remained one of her classics and extremely popular with her fans.

“Poker Face” – Lady Gaga’s Use of Poker as a Metaphor

Indeed, poker is a game known for its bluffing. Depending on the cards they have been dealt, players may find that they have to bluff their way through the game. They may have to take certain actions to try and take the scent off them, engaging in powers of deception as they try to outwit their opponents and obtain the type of result that they desire.

Using the art of bluffing in the game as a metaphor, Gaga used the technique to describe how an individual would wear a mask to hide their true feelings from an emotional point of view. The concept works as people are known to have to try and hide their real feelings and emotions from times when in relationships, as not everything can go the way that they would hope or dream it does.

In doing so, she illustrates the tension and control that can be needed to maintain a tough exterior. She doesn’t want her partner or those interested in her knowing how she truly feels about them; much in the same way a poker player doesn’t want to give their position away to their opponents.

In the song, she cites how vulnerability can be a strength and a weakness, revealing the inner conflict that she is having to go through. She is playing with the idea of expressing how she really feels, but at the same time, doesn’t want to give the game away and avoid being left feeling hurt.

Strategy is the Main Narrative

It’s possible to infer that strategy is the main narrative when it comes to “Poker Face”, which the classic card game is known for.

Gaga’s song highlights how love can be a game in itself, as the player needs to know when to make the right move. They don’t want to experience their own “Game Over” scenario by making a mistake. As a result, they can mask how they truly feel to avoid disappointment or being hurt. With a strategy in place, her song perhaps highlights how it can keep them at a distance and teach the importance of being reserved and holding back.

Of course, it’s not always the best tactic, but the same can be said about poker. Both are extremely complex and aren’t straightforward. Emotional masks can be incredibly effective at times, but they can also be detrimental to some.

“Poker Face” helps to highlight this through its lyrics, as it highlights the conflict an individual can go through when trying to bluff their way through, whether it be in romance or life.
