0How to Get Started in Throne and Liberty
As the newest MMORPG on the scene, NCSoft’s Throne and Liberty may feel familiar to many MMO fans—but don’t be fooled, it has plenty of intricacies and quirks which set it apart from its aged genre competition. This guide will walk you through all the concepts you should get your head around when starting with the game; from character creation to early game tips and tricks.
Let’s get your journey started right.
Character Creation and Class System
Building your character is the first hurdle in and RPG. Throne and Liberty is no different. So let’s run through the key concepts.
Understanding the Class System
Forget what you know about MMO class systems. Throne and Liberty’s classes are based not on a class you choose at the beginning of your run—but on the weapon you yield.Â
That means you can effectively switch class mid-fight by switching to a new weapon. Not only that, but it almost entirely eliminates the need for having multiple characters on your account—as you can simply switch around your gear.
Weapon Types
There are six categories of weapons in Throne and Liberty:
Dagger – Fast and stealthy, the dagger is great for PvP but has limited crowd control making it less universally viable in PvE.
Great Sword – Hugely powerful in PvE, the great sword offers impressive AoE, crowd control and group buffs.
Crossbow – Ranged and rapid, the crossbow offers powerful burst damage to take down foes from afar in either PvE of PvP.
Wand and Tome – One of the magic options, wand offers various healing and support skills for team play. While also dishing out some damage over time.
Sword and Shield – The tanking weapon of choice, this offers plenty of buffs and defensive potential.
Longbow – Perhaps the easiest weapon to grasp in TL, the Longbow dishes out impressive damage at range.
Staff – Arguably the greatest farming weapon in the game, the staff excels at laying waste to crowds in PvE thanks to its great AoE abilities.
Character Customization
In Throne and Liberty, the only part of character creation which sticks is your character’s appearance. While these can be changed later through the store, you’ll need to buy Throne and Liberty Lucent in order to change your appearance later on in the game.
Early Game Progression
Of the 50 levels your character can currently progress through, the first 20 are considered early game. While in this part of the game you should be focusing on five key things:
- Progress the main storyline—to keep the main quest in line with your level while getting you some of the game’s best vanilla gear.
- Learn a variety of weapons—experiment with different weapons for different situations, and build up your experience with each weapon’s skill set.
- Join a guild—to gain the social and material benefits.
- Get to grips with the territory control system—This is another unique feature of TL, which we’ll look at more closely in a moment.
- Gather materials and get crafting—as with any MMO crafting is a huge part of TL, both for levelling and making money. Crafting from the get-go will stop you from needing to grind later on.
Essential Game Systems
If you haven’t gathered it so far, TL is a bit different than many other MMOs. These are three systems which you’ll need to get your head around to perform well in the game:
Transformation System
Perhaps the most flashy new feature, Throne and Liberty lets players transform into various different creatures to gain a variety of benefits.
Each form has unique abilities and movement options, making them all useful in different circumstances. Some will be useful for exploration, others can be a game-changer in combat. But whatever the situation, learning how to manage energy is important.
That said, transformations are unlocked through the main story, so you will unlock these as you progress.
Territory Control
Territory control is a PvP component of Throne and Liberty, seeing guilds and factions fighting for control of the game’s map in order to gather gold, materials and more for the controlling side.
Weather System
While this may sound boring, TL’s weather system actually impacts the gameplay in meaningful ways. It affects combat abilities and stats. It changes the available resources you can gather. It influences monster behaviour. And it can even (un)lock certain areas on the map. Provided you’re aware of that, you’ll find it way easier to get around TL.
Combat Basics
As already mentioned, weapons are TL’s version of classes. But each weapon mastery is upgraded independently. Meaning you’ll have to use a weapon to upgrade it. This means it can be useful to focus on using one or two weapons to start with, in order to learn the rotations and upgrade these skill sets.
Dodging is also a huge part of TL, so be sure to learn perfect dodge timing!
10 Advanced Tips for Early Game Success
This is a quickfire list of things to do to kickstart your time in TL:
