Van Taylor Monroe Talks Paints Power & Purpose | SBR Talk Series

From East Cleveland to the Smithsonian – Van Taylor Monroe's Journey of Art, Identity & Purpose

Van Taylor Monroe, an artist from East Cleveland, Ohio, has transformed his passion for art into a career that bridges community roots and national recognition. Known for his custom hand-painted sneakers and vibrant murals.  Watch the entire episode after the recap!

Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Van Taylor Monroe grew up in East Cleveland, Ohio, in a family that supported his creative side. As a child, he rarely saw Black male artists in the media or museums. Still, he found inspiration through his mother and a teacher who noticed his early talent. That moment helped Monroe begin to see art as more than a hobby — it became a possible career path.

In college, Monroe first studied graphic design, then switched to psychology at Miami University in Ohio. While in school, he began hand-painting sneakers for students on campus. What began as a way to make some extra income turned into a passion project. The customized sneakers soon became part of his identity as an artist.

Breakthrough with Custom Sneakers

Monroe’s career took a major step forward in 2008 when he painted a pair of sneakers in honor of then-presidential candidate Barack Obama. The custom design featured Obama’s portrait and messages of hope. Photos of the shoes quickly spread online, gaining national attention.

That single pair of sneakers eventually became part of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. The moment validated his belief that art could be a vehicle for larger conversations — and it helped others take notice of his voice as both an artist and a cultural contributor.

Community Engagement and Murals

Even as Monroe gained attention on larger platforms, he stayed focused on serving his local community. One of his major public works is a mural titled What Is That in Thine Hand?, painted at St. Adalbert Catholic School in Cleveland. The piece shows two African American children and includes a biblical reference meant to inspire students.

His work often includes themes of resilience, faith, and self-empowerment. Through color and symbolism, Monroe gives voice to stories often left out of traditional art spaces.

Current Projects and Future Endeavors

Monroe is now working on an animated project called Niah, which follows a young girl who discovers she has a gift and a calling to protect her community. The goal is to create positive representation and spark imagination in younger viewers, especially those who rarely see themselves in lead roles. https://www.vanmonroe.com/

Through every new project, Monroe continues to reflect the world around him — while encouraging others to see themselves as valuable, creative, and capable of shaping their own paths.
