AI composition accelerates this trend. When machines learn Bach’s style by analyzing 2,503 chorales, they capture surface patterns but miss the spiritual conviction and cultural context that informed Bach’s compositions. Projects like the AI-completed “Beethoven’s 10th Symphony” highlight this tension between technical capability and authentic artistic voice.

Midwifing New Music into the World

Cho-Liang Lin teaches a captivating metaphor for his work with new human compositions: “You never know whether a piece will endure the test of time, but you have to give the piece a chance,” he reflects. “It’s like a baby. The piece starts off as a baby, but you must deliver it. I’m the doctor who introduces the baby to the public and showcases it to them.” 

Having championed human composers throughout his career, commissioning and premiering 54 new works during his 18-year tenure at La Jolla SummerFest alone, Lin understands the delicate process of nurturing new music. They simply generate patterns based on what they’ve been fed, creating technically proficient but spiritually vacant music. Lin sees potential value in these systems primarily as tools for exploration rather than finished artistic statements.

Finding Integrity in an Age of Imitation

Watching Cho-Liang Lin demonstrate a passage on his Stradivarius, one understands immediately what AI composition currently lacks. His fingers dance across the fingerboard with a sculptor’s precision, yet each phrase breathes with organic spontaneity.

“What really counts is your quality of playing, your integrity as a musician, and your ultimate skill as a violinist,” Lin emphasizes when discussing how fundamental musicianship remains crucial despite changing technological contexts. 

Online forums buzz with heated debates about whether AI compositions constitute “the death of classical music”, but Lin sees the conversation differently. Rather than viewing AI as threat or savior, he considers it one more tool in the evolving relationship between musicians and technology.

Contemplating AI’s future role in classical music, Lin returns to the balance that has guided his career: respecting tradition while embracing innovation. “Technology enhances the concert experience,” he acknowledges, “but we must ensure it doesn’t overshadow the music itself.” 

Starting with a toy violin that “quickly wore out because I kept using it,” the physicality and emotional investment in music-making remain irreplaceable for Lin. His early passion for the instrument, so strong he would “drop everything” to hear a neighbor practice, illuminates music’s deepest power: its ability to forge human connections. 

Many classical institutions, from giant orchestras to small chambers, have approached AI with apprehension. Forum discussions among musicians reveal anxiety that artificial systems might “kill classical music.” Yet Lin’s career offers a historical perspective.
