Lil Mike Rises: Indiana Rap Star Arrives With A Memorable Message In Music

Michael Jones, also known as Lil Mike, is a hip-hop artist born and raised in Anderson, Indiana. Making his debut as an up-and-coming artist, the Indiana native quickly developed a strong passion for music at the age of 11 or 12.

He soon emerged with his distinctive and experimental sound in hip-hop. With influences like 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Andre 3000, Tupac, Eminem, Notorious B.I.G., and Kendrick Lamar, and more to follow, there’s no doubt that this fresh new artist is making a way for himself and is surely one to look out for.

As an authentic artist, Lil Mike’s goal is not just to make music but to make memorable messages. Writing with a competitive spirit and eagerness to inspire, Lil Mike’s lyricism and soothing messages in his records are sure to never go unnoticed when it comes to any audience, from inspirations to write from the streets/community he comes from, along with being real with himself.

Check out the exclusive interview with Lil Mike below, along with his new hit single “Weight Up” out now.

What city do you rep?

Anderson, Indiana
What is unique about you and your music?

Just always try to be authentic, and be true to self.

What shaped your music?

What shaped my music was Anderson, struggles, wins, losses, and emotions. The community, I want to lift up my people. The music I listened to while growing up was Usher, Prince, Michael Jackson, Snoop, and Pac. Outkast, The Isley Brothers, Marvin Gaye, 50 Cent, Eminem, Lil Wayne, and so forth. I listen to so much music.

When did you realize you were going to make music professionally?

I knew since I was 11 (laughing)

What type of music do you listen to?

I listen to a lot of oldies

What inspires you to write music?

It varies; it can be as simple as looking at something a different way or talking to people.

What do you do when you don’t do music (creative or otherwise) and that you are passionate about?

I am with family, and I just like being in peace and silence, honestly.

Happiness to you is…

Loving when people come up to me saying they can relate to my music or my music saved their lives.
What do you wish you were told when you first started making music that you think would help artists just starting out?

Getting your own equipment so you can be hands-on with everything.

Tell us about your upcoming projects…

Just released a record “weight up” so our focus is to continue to build off of that at the moment.
