Netflix Debuts Award-Winning Doc-Musical ‘Songs from the Hole’
The powerful story of JJ’88’s redemption, written behind bars, premieres globally August 13

An Unfiltered Journey of Healing Through Music
Netflix has released the official trailer for its latest documentary feature, ‘Songs from the Hole,’ an intimate and lyrical portrait of incarcerated musician James “JJ’88” Jacobs. Told through journal entries, original songs, and poetic narration, the film captures JJ’88’s search for healing, identity, and transformation while serving a double-life sentence. The groundbreaking documentary-musical will premiere globally on Netflix, Wednesday, August 13.
A Visionary Collaboration Behind the Scenes
Directed by Contessa Gayles (‘The Feminist on Cellblock Y,’ ‘Founder Girls’), ‘Songs from the Hole’ is the result of an inventive partnership between the filmmaker, writer-musician JJ’88, and producer/music producer richie reseda. Together, they crafted a hybrid storytelling approach that weaves nonfiction interviews with imagined memories, spiritual dialogues, and dreamscapes—all set to JJ’88’s original music. The result is a visual album and emotional narrative of accountability, grief, hope, and redemption.
Soundtrack to Freedom: ‘Here Now’ Leads the Way
Ahead of the film’s debut, JJ’88 released “Here Now,” the lead single from the film’s accompanying EP. Backed by soulful boom-bap production from Tariq and Garfield Bright of Twiin Towers, the track captures a moment of reflection and reawakening:
“I was reflecting on my journey when I wrote ‘Here Now,’” said JJ’88. “I was in the Santa Cruz redwoods, just miles from the prison where I made ‘Songs from the Hole.’ It’s a declaration of my arrival to the free world and my music dreams.”
The 13-track EP, also titled ‘Songs from the Hole,’ will be released in tandem with the film and serves as a melodic document of survival and growth from within the prison system.
Synopsis: A Life Rewritten Through Art
At just 15 years old, JJ’88 took a life. Three days later, his brother was killed. What followed is a decades-long journey of grief, self-reckoning, and transformation. ‘Songs from the Hole’ documents that journey, combining music and mixed-media visuals to explore the possibility of healing and redemption through creativity.
The documentary draws from JJ’88’s own narration, journal entries, and songs written behind bars. As a person who has both inflicted and endured violent loss, JJ’88 reveals his internal dialogue with truth, responsibility, and spiritual evolution. It is a raw and radical meditation on what it means to live, grow, and heal from the inside out.
