Tyler Watts: Mentored by Legends, Shaping Miami R&B

How a young singer from Miami found his voice, his mentors, and his moment

The Making of a Young Lion

Tyler Watts isn’t your average up-and-comer. The Miami native, affectionately known as a ‘young lion’ by his mentors, began his music journey before most kids had even started school. By the age of three, he was singing along to Michael Jackson and Chris Brown, exhibiting early signs of the confidence and charisma that would one day define his artistry. You can view our whole conversation below.

‘I remember singing at my grandmother’s birthday,’ he recalls. ‘The projector broke, so I had to sing live. I was nervous, but the way people reacted… it changed everything.’

That moment sparked a lifelong passion for music. Today, Tyler carries himself with quiet determination offstage and an electrifying presence onstage. He’s equal parts humble and hungry, channeling that balance into every performance and recording.

Mentored by Icons: Lessons from the Greats

Tyler’s musical foundation was shaped by one of R&B’s most revered voices: The late Betty Wright. Through a connection made by his father, Tyler began vocal lessons with Wright, who became both mentor and guiding light.

‘She taught me to stay on beat, stay focused, and avoid distractions,’ he says. ‘She made me understand that this isn’t just talent; it’s work, discipline, and purpose.’

Under her mentorship and through the Little Dreamers Foundation, Tyler shared stages with legends, including Wright herself and Phil Collins. Those early performances opened his eyes to what excellence looked like and gave him the confidence to believe he belonged among the greats.

The Miami Sound: Culture, Rhythm, and Identity

Miami’s music scene is often associated with Hip Hop and Latin beats, but Tyler has carved a lane all his own. His sound blends classic R&B emotion with the city’s sun-soaked rhythm and multicultural spirit.

‘Miami gives you flavor,’ Tyler explains. ‘Even if you’re doing R&B, that energy seeps into the music. It keeps me original.’

He credits his tight-knit family and Miami’s supportive creative community for his continued growth. ‘My city shows love,’ he adds. ‘They want to see you win, especially when you’re representing something positive.’ When I say ‘tight-knit,’ that includes his mother being his stylist and his father being present as management.

The Breakthrough: From Jacquees to FYB Records

In 2023, Tyler opened for Jacquees on the Sincerely For You tour. What happened next reads like a dream come true. After his set, Tyler approached Jacquees during the meet and greet, sang a few bars, and left the R&B veteran stunned.

‘Jacquees asked if I was signed,’ Tyler says. ‘When I said no, he said, ‘Well, you are now.’’

That spontaneous moment landed Tyler a deal with FYB Records, setting the stage for his breakout single, Prettiest Girl. The collaboration with Jacquees quickly caught fire, amassing over 2 million streams and sparking more than one million TikTok videos.

The chemistry between mentor and protégé was undeniable. Jacquees helped Tyler refine the track, adding details that made the song shine. ‘He pushed me to make it my own,’ Tyler says. ‘That’s real mentorship.’

Preparation and Performance: The Art of the Stage

Despite his youth, Tyler approaches performing with a veteran’s mindset. He trains his voice daily with custom warm-up routines provided by his coaches and mentally prepares by immersing himself in R&B playlists before each show.

‘I treat every performance like it’s the biggest one,’ he says. ‘Whether it’s a small club or the Super Bowl Fan Fest, I make sure the energy is right.’

He adjusts his vocal dynamics to fit each space, prioritizing both sound quality and audience connection. That professionalism has already earned him comparisons to some of R&B’s most respected young stars.

Style and Brand: Music Meets Fashion

Tyler’s creative vision extends beyond music. Together with his mother, who also serves as his stylist, he curates looks that reflect both his Miami roots and his evolving artistic style.

‘Fashion is how I tell people who I am before I even sing,’ he says. ‘My mom and I plan every outfit around the vibe of the show.’

Their collaboration eventually inspired a clothing line featuring hoodies, shirts, and hats. ‘Seeing fans wear my designs hits different,’ Tyler smiles. ‘It’s another way for them to connect with my journey.’

Family, Faith, and Focus

Behind Tyler’s rising fame is a family rooted in faith, patience, and perseverance. His parents have guided him with steady hands, drawing from advice once shared by Betty Wright: Stay grounded, stay smart, and stay patient.

His father, Sam, a former Division I athlete, initially envisioned a sports career for Tyler. But once he saw his son’s musical talents, he fully supported the pivot. ‘They’ve been my backbone,’ Tyler says. ‘They keep me focused when things move fast.’

The Vision Ahead

Tyler’s ambitions reach far beyond the next single. He dreams of headlining tours, winning GRAMMYs, and eventually creating his own label to mentor other young artists.

‘I want to make music that outlives me,’ he says. ‘Something that touches generations.’

His new EP, Youngin Part 2, promises to continue that mission, merging soulful storytelling with fresh, contemporary R&B production.

Why Tyler Watts is One to Watch

Tyler Watts represents the next generation of R&B: talented, disciplined, and deeply connected to his roots. His rise is proof that mentorship, family support, and hard work still matter in today’s fast-paced industry.
