Alt-Pop Auteur Maya J’an Recounts The L.A. Fires On Her Haunting Debut “Cul-De-Sac”

Emerging alt-pop auteur Maya J’an makes her Warner Records debut with her soul-stirring single “cul-de-sac.” Poignantly arriving one year after the devastating Los Angeles fires of 2025, the synth-drenched song, produced by Jonas Jurstrom, not only demonstrates the singer-songwriter’s deeply personal artistry, but also doubles as a tribute to her hometown of Pasadena and the pieces of her youth that were incinerated in the blaze.

Alongside the release, Maya wants to spotlight and activate support toward Altadena Girls, a community-driven organization centered on creativity and healing for girls impacted by the Los Angeles fires. Over the past year, Altadena Girls have remained consistent in providing support to families in affected areas. Additional information on the organization and opportunities to donate can be found HERE.
A behind-the-scenes force whose songwriting prowess has brought her into the room with Pharrell, SAINt JHN, Justine Skye, Aqyila and others, Maya now comes into her own as an artist on “cul-de-sac” — a song that her followers across Instagram and TikTok have been urging her to release since she vulnerably shared a snippet last summer.
Hauntingly gorgeous and rich with nostalgia, “cul-de-sac” feels like something special from the start. Over burbling tones and echoing drums, Maya’s voice arrives breathy, sweet, and pained. Her poetry is personal and visceral, full of details both concrete and impressionistic. As strings swell and bare hands clap out a rhythm, her word rings out, lingering in the air: “All alone, you got nowhere to go, no / I know that you can always come home / I’ll be waiting outside of the cul-de-sac, like in the paperbacks / Blowing and throwing back, blow one and throw one.”
“‘cul-de-sac’ is my love letter to where I’m from — Pasadena, California — and to the places of my childhood that disappeared after the fires of January 2025,” says Maya about the debut single. “After driving through what was damaged, I was overwhelmed by longing, nostalgia, and loss. ‘cul-de-sac’ is an ode, and sometimes a portal, to the places I can no longer visit.”
Every tender lyric and melody is written by Maya herself, with each song beginning as a diary entry that’s then carefully molded to musical structure. It’s no wonder her past work has included co-writing Aqyila’s “Bloom,” which won Contemporary R&B Recording of the Year at the 2025 Juno Awards, and that she’s nurtured a close relationship with her online community, whom she considers her collaborators. A multi-faceted artist who is fearless when it comes to sharing herself, Maya also keeps a Substack full of photos, words, and deeper context.
