2026 Sundance Film Festival Awards Bold Voices and Groundbreaking Stories
Sundance Film Festival announces winners, crowning daring films and visionary storytellers, celebrating cinematic innovation and cultural impact in its final year in Park City, UT.

The 2026 Sundance Film Festival has wrapped its final unforgettable year of boundary-pushing storytelling in Park City, UT, honoring films that dare to challenge, inspire, and ignite conversation. From intimate character studies to global documentaries capturing the human spirit, this year’s award winners remind us why Sundance remains the heartbeat of independent cinema.
At the Festival’s awards ceremony at The Ray Theatre, the spotlight shone on films that left audiences and jurors equally moved. In the U.S. Dramatic Competition, Josephine claimed the Grand Jury Prize and also took home the Audience Award presented by Acura. Director Beth de Araújo delivers a delicate, powerful narrative about a young girl grappling with trauma and a world that often fails to protect her—a story told with nuance, humanity, and courage.
In the documentary arena, Nuisance Bear (U.S. Documentary Competition) captured hearts and minds, earning the Grand Jury Prize. Gabriela Osio Vanden and Jack Weisman’s film follows a polar bear navigating a world increasingly shaped by humans, blending humor, tension, and environmental urgency into a story that is as entertaining as it is profound.
Across the globe, the World Cinema winners spoke to resilience, identity, and social change. Shame and Money (Dramatic) portrays a Kosovar family rebuilding their lives amid economic and societal upheaval, while To Hold a Mountain (Documentary) tells the story of a Montenegrin mother and daughter defending their ancestral land—a stunning reminder that cinema can make the personal political.
Innovation and creativity were also celebrated in the NEXT section, with Adobe presenting The Incomer as the Innovator Award winner, and TheyDream receiving the Special Jury Award. These films showcase fearless storytelling that blends folklore, humor, and heart, highlighting Sundance’s ongoing commitment to daring new voices.
Audience favorites weren’t just limited to the U.S. competitions. HOLD ONTO ME (Κράτα Με) and One In A Million captured hearts in the World Cinema categories, offering poignant explorations of family, migration, and connection across borders. Aanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild] also won the NEXT Audience Award, a moving documentary delving into Indigenous history and the reclaiming of cultural legacy.
Beyond the top awards, jurors honored outstanding direction, acting, writing, and editing. Films like Ha-chan, Shake Your Booty!, Soul Patrol, and How to Divorce During the War brought bold perspectives, emotional depth, and inventive storytelling to screens large and small. Special jury recognitions celebrated creative vision, ensemble acting, journalistic excellence, and impact for change, ensuring a diverse slate of voices received their well-deserved moment in the spotlight.
“As we conclude this memorable edition of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, we’re thrilled to celebrate our award-winning films and all the artists who participated in this year’s wonderful Festival,” said Eugene Hernandez, Director, Sundance Film Festival and Public Programming. “Thank you to all of the artists and audiences who made this Festival one we’ll remember for a long time, and we’re deeply grateful to our friends and partners in Park City, Salt Lake City, and all across Utah, home to so many cherished Festivals. We salute and thank Utah’s moviegoers who have embraced this Festival and our founder Robert Redford’s vision. As this 2026 edition draws to a close, we’re remembering all of these times spent together.”
Sundance has long been the launchpad for films that redefine cinema. The 2026 Festival featured 97 feature-length works, 54 shorts, and episodic projects chosen from over 16,000 submissions worldwide, giving audiences an extraordinary lineup of perspectives, voices, and visions.
