Mitch Jones Brings Twitch Chat to the Big Stage

The longtime streamer is developing larger live productions that give audiences a role in the action while maintaining his connection with his community.

Mitch Jones is expanding his approach to livestreaming with a focus on larger productions and real-time audience participation. The longtime Twitch creator is developing events that combine the staging and structure of television with the direct interaction that helped build his online following.

A live game show streamed on Twitch in July offered a look at that direction. Produced at Jones’ Los Angeles studio, the event featured professional lighting, LED displays, broadcast infrastructure and a large stage. Creators including Sodapoppin, NMPlol and Bean participated in the physical competition, while viewers at home helped determine mystery prizes.

The format gave Twitch chat a role beyond commentary. Audience participation became part of the production itself, connecting a staged competition with viewers who could influence elements of the experience as it unfolded.

Bringing Audience Participation Into the Production

Livestreaming allows creators and viewers to respond to one another without waiting for an edited video or a subsequent episode. Communities develop shared jokes, react to unexpected moments and contribute to the direction of a broadcast.

Jones is applying that interaction to events with more planning, equipment and production resources. His aim is to preserve the responsiveness of a regular stream while creating room for more elaborate entertainment.

“It really is the perfect sandbox I’ve always wanted to execute high-level productions,” Jones said.

The July game show illustrated how those elements can work together. Its stage and production equipment provided a structured setting, while viewer involvement introduced the spontaneity audiences associate with Twitch.

From World of Warcraft to Live Events

Jones first built an audience through World of Warcraft streams, where his energetic delivery, unpredictable exchanges, and frequent interaction with chat helped establish his following.

His career also included involvement in the early development of IRL, or “in real life,” streaming. During that period, he worked alongside his late friend and fellow creator Byron “Reckful” Bernstein as streamers explored formats beyond gaming.

Across more than a decade, Jones has watched livestreaming expand to include conversation, music, art, sports and creator-led events. His latest projects draw on that experience, particularly the relationship between a host and an audience accustomed to being acknowledged in real time.

Larger productions introduce a different set of demands, from coordinating participants to managing technical systems. For Jones, maintaining regular contact with his viewers remains part of the plan.

“I’m still streaming consistently and staying connected to my community while we continue building these larger productions,” Jones said. “I want to keep creating my regular content while increasing the scale and frequency of these bigger, more planned-out events.”

Building Scale While Staying Connected

Jones’ strategy pairs ongoing streams with larger scheduled events, giving his community both familiar content and new formats to explore.

The distinction matters to the experience he is trying to create. A larger set can change how a broadcast looks, but audience participation changes how it unfolds. Allowing viewers to help determine mystery prizes, for example, gives them a specific role within a planned production.

Jones describes his ambitions in terms of both production growth and creative development.

“Success for me looks like continuing to grow in this new direction of changing the game with streaming larger productions, increasing the budget, and bringing new creative content into the streaming world,” Jones said.

His next phase will test how consistently he can bring those ambitions together. The July production offered an example of the format: a staged event with recognizable creators, professional production resources, and an audience invited to participate from home.
