Durham Shows Out: Beats N Bars Celebrates 10 Years

When people talk about the epicenter of hip-hop culture, the local soul of Durham, NC demands a permanent place in the conversation. For a decade, Beats N Bars Festival has served as the steady heartbeat of the Triangle’s music scene. Over Labor Day Weekend, the 10-Year Grand Finale proved that while a chapter may be closing, the legacy, love, and community forged over the last ten years are locked in forever.

Founded by Crystal Taylor, Beats N Bars has spent a decade pouring raw passion, platform, and purpose directly into the Bull City. The Grand Finale was a shining testament to what happens when an entire city shows up to wrap its arms around one of its own.

THE CONCERT: HIGH ENERGY, PURE SOUL, AND UNMATCHED VIBES AT THE FRUIT

The celebration kicked off with DJ Mayor setting the tone, turning the floor into a day party that felt like a family reunion. Old friends caught up, new connections clicked instantly, and the energy in the room was thick with nostalgia.

When the live sets started, the stage erupted:

  • C. Shreve the Professor took the mic first and set the bar sky-high, commanding the stage with sharp lyrical craftsmanship that instantly locked the crowd in.

  • Flauce brought a powerful moment of worship, delivering the Word and a deep spiritual energy right to the heart of the venue.

  • Carlitta Durand blessed the room with her signature vocal brilliance, wrapping the audience in pure soul and effortless grace.

  • Gavin Maestro closed out the night with serious magic. Backed by a five-piece live band and powerhouse background vocalists who took the show to another level, his headlining performance raised the roof and left the crowd in absolute awe.

Between live media interviews happening throughout the space and non-stop love floating through the room, Saturday captured the exact magic that makes Durham’s local music space so special.

FROM THE STAGE TO THE SKY: TAKING THE PARTY TO THE ROOFTOP

Once the bass settled at The Fruit, the energy didn’t stop—it just elevated. On Sunday, the crowd migrated from the concert floor to the top of the city, bringing that same electric spirit up to The Durham Hotel Rooftop for the Heard It All Before Music Trivia Night. What started as a game quickly turned into an interactive rooftop block party against the skyline.

Families, long-time friends, and couples gathered around tables to test their music IQ. With DJ Complex spinning classic originals alongside the iconic hip-hop samples we all grew up on, the entire space lit up. The crowd didn’t just sit and play—they sang along at the top of their lungs, broke into impromptu backup dancing, and turned the trivia competition into a full-blown rooftop karaoke session.

The competitive spirit was real, the friendly trash talk was flowing, and the energy proved exactly why the Heard It All Before game is such a hit. Long before the final track played, people were already walking up to the team asking the same question: “When are we doing this again?!”

A DECADE OF COMMUNITY: THE LEGACY OF CRYSTAL TAYLOR & BEATS N BARS

Beyond the music, the bass, and the rooftop views, the true centerpiece of the entire weekend was community.

Beats N Bars has always been more than a festival—it is a movement powered by Crystal Taylor’s vision and her deep, unshakeable love for Durham. Over the last 10 years, Crystal has built a safe, vibrant, and empowering home for artists, music lovers, and culture leaders from all walks of life.

While there was a bittersweet feeling in watching the festival reach its final curtain, the weekend went out on the highest possible note. Durham showed up to give Crystal and the entire Beats N Bars crew their flowers, proving that the foundation built here will continue to feed the NC music scene for generations to come.

Thank you, Durham. Thank you to every artist, DJ, attendee, and partner who made the 10-Year Grand Finale an absolute triumph.

10 Years. One Love. Beats N Bars Forever.
