Kanye West’s Redemption at Coachella Sunday Service

Written by Crystal Willis

Many have been wondering whether this elusive “Sunday Service” Kanye West has reportedly been orchestrating in the hills above Los Angeles was just a publicity stunt, or another round of his polarizing antics. While the organic buzz among the musician community has steadily grown, it wasn’t widely known until Kanye announced on his social media that he would be taking his new Sunday mass to the desert mount of Coachella’s annual arts and music festival.

Kanye’s faith and followers were on full display despite the tension still lingering in the court of public opinion around being led astray by the “dragon energy” of President Trump, and his subsequent swearing off of politics in October 2018.

At 9 a.m. on Easter Sunday morning, over 100 top musicians and choir members including guests Ty Dolla Sign, Kid Cudi, Teyana Taylor, DMX, 2 Chainz and Chance The Rapper took to the man-made hill to praise God and make history. As they performed a mixture of new-age baptist style tunes and remixed Kanye West hits, VIPs such as Idris Elba, Jermaine Dupri, Childish Gambino, and the Kardashian crew cheered them on.

In the first ever gospel performance at Coachella, a massive audience of festival-goers had a morning full of high-energy praise to redeem themselves from their 4/20 shenanigans the day before. With what appeared to be genuine passion and glory, Kanye West’s Sunday Service was an arm-raising, foot-stomping spectacle to behold. This new wave of love and artistry felt as though we were seeing Kanye at his highest self.

If Ye chooses to pour out his heart with this level of vulnerability and creativity to give honor to God, who are we to judge?
