Remy Johnson – Get to the Bag

Fresh from his success with the single entitled “UGH,” rap and hip hop artist, Remy Johnson, released his new single “Get to the Bag” on May 31. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, his music is making headlines around the world.

“The whole song is pretty much freestyle,” said Remy Johnson. “After I made the beat, the chorus just came to me. Just kinda got the vibe and ran with it. I always thought I heard music different and wanted to understand the process. Instead of just listening to a song as a kid, I would always try to deconstruct it and emulate the process of putting it back together. That curiosity was my biggest inspiration.”

Remy Johnson has been making music since he was eight years old when his mother bought him his first keyboard. He began playing by ear, using his ability to deconstruct melodies and intuitively understand how different elements fit together. He started rapping when he was 12 and producing hip hop at home when he was 15. He also plays drums.

Some of his early influences include Eli Sostre, Bryson Tiller, Don Q. Vado and PARTYNEXTDOOR, all of which place intense focus on their writing.

Remy Johnson believes the artist with the biggest impact on the world’s musical was Tupac.

“His writing style and storytelling allowed his music to touch any demographic regardless of age, colour or socioeconomic background,” said Remy Johnson. “His simple and direct writing style made his music easy to digest, especially to fans who primarily didn’t listen to hip hop.”

Remy Johnson loves performing and he’s discovered a talent and passion for producing. He particularly enjoys the challenge of bringing another artist’s vision to life, especially if it’s not a genre he’s used to producing. “It allows me to really deconstruct a song and put it back together my way, like a LEGO® set,” said Remy Johnson.

A man of many talents, he writes and produces all his own music. Outside of his music, he believes the three most interesting facts about himself is that he’s a twin, he only started singing a year ago, and he can dismantle a gun and put it back together.

The producer, rapper and hip hop artist is enjoying enormous success and hopes to win a Grammy someday. In the meantime, he’s happy writing, performing and producing new music. “So much time and effort goes into making a solid track,” said Johnson. “I’m humbled by how well my music is being received on Spotify and that so many people enjoy the finished product.”
