WORLD Channel to Showcase Films Commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month

WORLD Channel, public media’s premiere conveyor of human stories, will showcase stories of the Hispanic and Latino communities to mark Hispanic Heritage Month. Over the past decade the Latinx population in America has grown by 23 percent, yet issues like immigration, housing and education persist and affect many Hispanic communities across the country. Stretching from September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans and the Latinx community to the history, culture and achievements of the United States.

“Hispanic heritage, just like Black or Asian heritage, is America’s heritage,” said Chris Hastings, executive producer of WORLD Channel at GBH in Boston. “It is important to celebrate all of the cultures that make up America, and the best way to do that is by sharing unique and impactful stories that everyone can connect with.”

As part of this effort, WORLD Channel will be premiering a new film and offering encores of several others that provide glimpses into the lives of Hispanic-Americans. These films include:

  • America ReFramed: Five Years North – NEW

The story of Luis, an undocumented Guatemalan boy who arrives in New York City with little support and many responsibilities, and Judy, a veteran ICE agent who must weigh the human cost of her work. Five Years North premieres on WORLD Channel Tuesday, October 5 at 8:00pm

  • Doc World: Siqueiros: Walls of Passion
The story of one of the great artists of the 20th century, David Alfaro Siqueiros. An advocate of modern public art, Siqueiros was one of the first muralists to paint on the exterior of buildings to bring art closer to the people. Siqueiros: Walls of Passion airs on WORLD Channel Sunday, September 19 at 10:00pm.
  • America ReFramed: The Unafraid

Banned from attending Georgia’s top five public universities and from paying in-state tuition at other public GA colleges, DACA students unite in this portrait of the undocumented struggling to pursue their dreams. The Unafraid airs on WORLD Channel Tuesday, September 28 at 8:00pm.

  • Doc World: Border South
Over five years, Raúl O. Paz-Pastrana filmed migrant routes from Mexico to the U.S. Mexico Border, assembling a portrait of thousands who disappeared. Witness the migration system that renders human beings invisible. Border South airs on WORLD Channel Sunday, September 26 at 10pm
  • America ReFramed: We Like it Like That

Created by largely Puerto Rican, Cuban and African American youths living alongside each other in the 1960s, Boogaloo music served as an authentic and vibrant cultural expression. Journey through a pivotal moment in ’60s music history when blues, funk and traditional Caribbean rhythms were fused to define a new generation of urban Latinos. We Like it Like That airs on WORLD Channel Tuesday, October 12 at 8:00pm

In addition to these key films, a variety of Hispanic Heritage Month content is available to stream on the WORLD Channel website, YouTube channel, PBS Passport and the PBS App. For more information about all available Latinx films and content, please visit the Hispanic Heritage Month Viewers Guide.
