Tony Cavalero On How He Landed A Role On “The Righteous Gemstones,” Playing Ozzy Osbourne In “The Dirt” & More

Last month it was announced that HBO had renewed the critically-acclaimed comedy series The Righteous Gemstones has been renewed for a third season. This announcement came within weeks of the premiere of the nine-episode second season of The Righteous Gemstones, which stars Danny McBride, John Goodman, Edi Patterson and Adam Devine, and airs weekly via HBO and HBO Max; the season two finale is scheduled to premiere on February 27, 2022. Created, written and executive produced by the aforementioned Danny McBride (HBO’s Vice Principals, Eastbound & Down) — and helmed alongside frequent collaborators Jody Hill and David Gordon Green — the show tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charity. Season two finds the blessed Gemstone family threatened by outsiders from both the past and present.

The season two cast of The Righteous Gemstones also includes Tony Cavalero, Cassidy Freeman, Tim Baltz, Skyler Gisondo, Greg Alan Williams, Walton Goggins, Jennifer Nettles, Jody Hill, Valyn Hall, Kelton DuMont, Gavin Munn, Jason Schwartzman, Eric Roberts, Eric Andre and Jessica Lowe. The aforementioned Tony Cavalero not only brings an extensive list of credits with the show — he starred as Dewey Finn on Nickelodeon’s School Of Rock, portrayed Ozzy Osbourne in The Dirt, and was in numerous episodes of Hart Of Dixie, Aim High and Glimpse — yet is also a graduate of both the Virginia Military Institute and The Groundlings. On The Righteous Gemstones, he portrays Keefe Chambers, a character you probably will not forget anytime soon, a self-described “former Satanist.”

On February 8, 2022, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tony Cavalero via Zoom, as embedded below. More on Cavalero and The Righteous Gemstones can be found by clicking here, here and here.
