Michael Star: New Frequency

Let’s hop right into this latest single, “7 o’clock,” featuring Bounty Killer — Tell me about this particular track; how did it actually come to fruition?

When I went to the studio and heard the riddim, the first time I heard it I knew I wanted Bounty to listen to it. It had somewhat of a smooth dancehall flow.

Of course “7 o’clock” comes courtesy of your still forthcoming new EP — What all can you reveal and / or divulge about said upcoming body of work?

New sounds and hard work are what everyone should expect. I try not to box myself into a certain genre of music. Being an artist in general is about exploring and creating new and different sounds. My EP will depict just that.

How then does this new material(s) either differ and or compare to previous Michael Star efforts?

It differs in a way from the concept and lyrics. “7 o’clock” showcases more maturity in my songwriting skills as well.

As a songwriter, when you sit down to pen your lyrics where do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw my inspiration from many things, but the main thing is from the world. The world is a book of many experiences and life lessons which allows me to create and relate to such events.

Reflecting, tell me your whole inception into music — When did you first become interested in it? And, how did it all begin for Michael Star?

At the age of 11 to 12yrs old I wanted to become an artist after doing musicals and plays, etcetera…I was an actor in a musical for 6 years. This experience shaped me into becoming a better performer, dancer and singer.

Now you’re a native of New York, correct? So growing up in ‘The Empire State,’ who all did / do you consider to be your strongest musical influences?

Yes, I was born In New York, but I was raised in Atlanta. Some of my big influences were from the Jamaican dance culture in Atlanta from a young age. However, my musical influences were Michael Jackson, James Brown, Chris Brown, Beres Hammond, Bounty Killer, (dad) Mikey Spice and many more.

Now because of who your father is, was music always the professional direction you had always planned to take?

No, music wasn’t–I always wanted to entertain from a very young age, but never knew which route to take. Being involved in a musical actually allowed me to explore my other talents, which are dancing and acting.

In having said that, how do you classify your overall sound and / or style?

My overall style is uplifting for sure. I always enjoyed doing music that’s fun and uplifting. I enjoy dancing a lot, so I often incorporate fun, upbeat sounds in my music.

Longevity, what do you attribute yours to?

Consistency!! And, practice! The musical journey can at times become depressing and callous, but if you stay true to your beliefs and love for music…being consistent comes naturally.

What do you want people to get from your music?

To feel it in their soul, and to enjoy great music…also, to uplift their spirits and mood.

On a more serious note, are you happy with the current state of music?

Yes, I see many people trying new sounds; it’s pretty cool to see. The important thing is to just don’t get lost in it.

Do you have any other outside / additional aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?

I love to act and dance also, which is not too far from the music side…but, I love to do those forms of art as well.

To date, what has been your greatest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?

Performing in front of large crowds. I’ve opened up for Beres Hammond, and at that time the crowd was around 1,000 people or more. It was an intense, yet exhilarating feeling to see how receptive the crowd was to my music.

What’s an average day like for you?

An average day for me is recording music or playing the drums. I’m always in my home studio either creating, producing music with other independent artists or writing songs. It’s never a dull day for me.

I respond by showing love and thanking them for always supporting me. I’ll also repost some of my fans’ comments or feature them on my Instagram page.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?

My favorite part is performing. My least favorite is maybe traveling, long drives or flights, which can take a toll on the body, and makes me feel tired sometimes.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Keep working hard and practice, never give up on your dreams and aspirations. Stay humble, and always remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Lastly, what’s next for you, Michael?

More great music, more visuals to look out for and upcoming projects. Definitely more collaborations, too, and more performances at events and festivals.

Is there anything I left out, or just plain forgot to mention?

Yes! My new single, “7 o’clock” featuring Bounty Killer is out now, available on all Digital Platforms!
