Young Devyn: Story To Tell

Let’s hop right into this single / video, “Decisions” — Tell me about this particular track; how did it come to fruition?

“Decisions” is just a fun song about making the decision to choose a more fly and flashy route that comes with the fun things in life, as opposed to focusing on the negatives in life like haters.

Can you talk to me a lil bit about this latest entry, “Outside,” featuring Fivio Foreign…

It’s a fun and energetic record, mixing Drill, with some of our favorite hits, with two prominent New York artists.

Of course both songs come courtesy of your brand new EP, Baby Goat 2, the anticipated follow-up to last year’s predecessor of the same name — Conceptually, what do this title represent both to and for you?

Elevation. Growth. A story that only the music could tell. Just know this type of music hasn’t been told from somebody in my shoes before, so this is gonna be legendary.

How then does Baby Goat 2 either differ and / or compare to previous efforts?

It compares and differs in many ways. BG and BG2 tell my story, but In different ways because I’m at a different point in my life. When Baby Goat was originally created I was still unsigned, working towards certain goals that you could hear me talk about in the music. This time around, a lot of the goals I was singing about I accomplished…so it’s opened up my appetite to more success.

This is a Def Jam / 4th B’Way project — What particular string of events actually led to this signing?

My manager and I already had an existing relationship [signed] with LaTrice (Burnette at 4th & B’Way) and when she made her executive move, we were fortunate and grateful to be able to make that same move with her to the historic rap music label, Def Jam!

As an emcee, when you sit down to pen your rhymes where do you draw your inspiration from?

Life. Everything and anything around me. And at this point I freestyle, so I really soak in as much as possible so my brain is filled with things to talk about that I experience. That’s why I’ll always win and why I always have something to say. People don’t like me because of a gimmick, people love me because of my story. So as long as I have life, I have a chance to talk about something new everyday.

Reflecting, tell me your whole inception into music — When did you become interested in it? And, how did it all begin for Young Devyn?

Started doing music at 8. I was singing Soca music, and then transitioned into rapping around 16.

Now you’re a native of Brooklyn, New York, correct? So growing up in ‘Gotham,’ who all did / do you consider to be your strongest musical influences?

Jay, Nicki, Meek, DMX, Jadakiss (and) Lauryn Hill.

In having said that, how do you classify your overall sound and / or style?

The everyday girl who had a dream and made it out scotch clean. No gimmick, no storyline, no beef…just talent.

Switching gears here…

Longevity, what do you attribute yours to?

This is really me. Cant be duplicated. As I said earlier, as long as I’m breathing I got a story to tell.

To date, what has been your greatest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?

I have so many…whether it’s performing in front of 30,000 people at 11 years old or sitting courtside and performing at the Barclays Center last year. I don’t know. My whole run is legendary.

What’s an average day like for you?

Wake up, eat, 100 calls and meetings, studio, go check my family, then go home and sleep.

Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans…

I love my supporters. “Fans” are just haters who don’t wanna say they love you, so they become fanned out. My supporters are the ones that I always interact with and show love to. I try to get to everybody as much as I can because those quick interactions is what could make somebody a supporter for life…or might even just put them in a better mood.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?

I love everything about it. The good and the bad. I know the role God gave me to fulfill on this earth, and it’s not an easy one. Nothing in this life comes easy, but I don’t complain because all of this is bigger than me. This is just God’s plan and I’m executing it. So I’m just learning to take whatever comes with this, and just appreciate my blessings.
