Morgan Heritage: The Journey

Let’s hop right into this lead single, “Who Deh Like U,” featuring Bounty Killer, Cham & Stonebwoy — Tell me about this particular track; how did it come to fruition?

The track was produced by a young producer out of Zimbabwe named Jusa Dumentor…he and Mojo linked up, and he gave it to Mojo along with a few other tracks. We, MH, came up with the song, recorded our parts, then reached out to Stonebwoy to join us on it and he did. Them Mojo reached out to Cham to join us and that happened, and finally it was Bounty Killa and that happened.

Of course “Who Deh Like U” comes courtesy of your brand new studio opus, The Homeland — Conceptually, what does this title represent both to and for you all?

The title The Homeland is Morgan Heritage paying tribute to the land of our parents, which is Jamaica, and the land of our ancestors, which is Africa.

How then does The Homeland either differ and/or compare to previous Morgan Heritage entries?

The Homeland is a World Music album. It’s the first time Morgan Heritage has done a full length album that is not Reggae.

Reflecting, tell me your whole inception into music — When did you all first become interested in it? And, how did it all begin for Morgan Heritage?

Music was in our home growing up thanks to our father, Denroy Morgan. And seeing our father do music, it inspired us to (do) the same thing he was doing.

Now where exactly do you all hail from? And growing up there, who all did / do you all consider to be your strongest musical influences?

We was all born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised between Springfield, Mass, and Brooklyn. We are highly influenced by American music; R&B, Hip Hop, Pop and Rock.

In having said that, how do you all classify your overall sound and / or style?

We call our music ROCKAZ…it’s Reggae music with an edge.

Switching gears here…

What do you all feel has and will continue to be the key to your longstanding success?

We just try our best to stay true to the changes of music throughout the years, and stay relevant with the times. And, always put JAH first!

What do you all want people to get from your music?

What we would love for people to get from our music is confidence in self, find happiness and love within the music.

On a more serious note, are you all happy with the current state of music?

We are very happy with the current state of music. Music today is the vision and brainchild of today’s youth. 20 years from now, it will be something else. A whole different sound that we can’t even imagine today.

Do you all have any other outside / additional aspirations, maybe even completely away from music?

We are always looking at other ventures outside of music. Time will reveal all things.

To date, what has been your greatest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?

There has been many great moments in our career. Honestly so much, it’s hard to just name one or a few.

What’s an average day like for you all?

When it comes to music…when we are in album / single or touring mode, it’s non stop. Everyday ia a busy day. On our down time, we love to relax and spend as much time as we can with family and friends.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?

Favorite part of this line of work is the journey, the story behind all the hard work it takes to keep going and to remain relevant. Least favorite part is that it can get very tiring.

What advice would you all have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Have confidence in yourself, and never give up if this is truly what you want to do. Work hard, and never get high on your own supply. Always be willing to learn…never feel like you know it all or feel like you’re at the top. There’s always more to achieve with something or somewhere.

Lastly, what’s next for Morgan Heritage?

What’s next for MH is going out and supporting our new album, The Homeland. Everything now is about The Homeand.
