Apollo Theater Presents A Special Evening with D’ANGELO and THE VANGUARD

The concert will mark the celebrated singer’s first U.S. engagement since the release of his first studio album in 14 years: Black Messiah

One Night Only

Saturday, February 7, 2015 – 8pm

Tickets Go on Sale on Wednesday, January 21st at 10am

The Apollo Theater announced that renowned musician D’Angelo and The Vanguard will grace its legendary stage for an epic one-night-only concert on Saturday, February 7th at 8pm. In 2014, D’Angelo shocked the music industry and fans alike with the release of his first studio album in 14 years – Black Messiah. The album has become one of the most buzzed about record releases in recent music history, debuting at number one on the Billboard charts and continues to receive critical acclaim. Fresh on the heels of the success of Black Messiah, this special evening is the singer’s only U.S. engagement since the album’s release and is scheduled just in advance of his recently announced The Second Coming European tour.

Additionally, the Apollo concert will mark D’Angelo’s first time headlining the iconic Theater. However, the Grammy Award–winning musician is no stranger to the Apollo. In 1991, at the age of 16, he competed in the Theater’s long running competition show, Amateur Night at the Apollo, under the group name Michael Archer and Precise. Describing this experience as “surreal” and “amazing,” the singer and his group went on to win three consecutive nights and a cash prize. Using his Amateur Night winnings, D’Angelo purchased recording equipment and began writing the songs that would eventually end up on his 1995 classic debut album, Brown Sugar. He later returned to the Apollo as a guest artist on the popular television show Showtime at the Apollo.

Since introducing the first Amateur Night contests in 1934, the Apollo Theater has served as a testing ground for new artists working across a variety of art forms, and has ushered in the emergence of many new musical genres – including jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, soul, and hip hop. Among the countless legendary performers who launched their careers at the Apollo are Lauryn Hill, Machine Gun Kelly, Miri Ben Ari, D’Angelo, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Michael Jackson, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, and Stevie Wonder; and the Apollo’s forward-looking artistic vision continues to build on this legacy.
