Introducing the 2016 Westword Music Awards Nominees: Vote Now!

For more than two decades, the Westword Music Showcase has celebrated Colorado’s dynamic music community — and this year’s festival promises to reflect the scene’s growth. The 2016 Showcase, on Saturday, June 25, will be bigger and better than ever, featuring national headliners and local favorites on two main stages, plus more than 100 musical acts from the Denver area on a dozen stages throughout the Golden Triangle.

This year, we asked over 200 of the state’s music experts, ranging from talent buyers to studio owners to fans, to nominate their favorite hometown acts. The results were overwhelming, with more than 800 bands and artists receiving votes. The results represent a wide swath of Colorado music, including both well-known names and numerous bands and artists who have not been nominated before.

More than 200 finalists from that nominating process are listed here. We’ve separated them by genre, but read those designations with caution: Most musicians find influence across many sonic aisles these days. A jazz artist might incorporate hip-hop; a rock band might borrow from Beethoven. So our categories, like the Westword Music Awards themselves, are meant to be a starting point. Be sure to check out these bands and vote for your favorites via our online poll.

The Westword Music Awards culminates in the Showcase, a full day of exciting live music. For the first time, there will be two main stages, which will host headliners including moombahton/electro star Dillon Francis, soulful indie rockers Cold War Kids and amped-up indie-pop duo Matt and Kim. The main-stage lineup is filled out by some of the best emerging rock-and-roll bands from around the world: Danish rockers New Politics, L.A. noise band HEALTH, electro-punks Brick + Mortar, Grizfolk and Black Pistol Fire. Winner of 93.3 KTCL’s Hometown for the Holidays, 888, will also perform on the main stage, along with other outstanding Denver bands. We look forward to celebrating Colorado’s endlessly rewarding music scene with you!
