Childish Gambino ‘Awaken, My Love’ debuts at number 1 on Billboard
Childish Gambino (@) continues to take heads and his latest offering is atop the charts at 1, 2 and 5 on Billboard. His forever song “Redbone” brought so much funk and honored the innovators so well, his new move could be changing the focus of R&B once again. The album enters the charts this week at #1 on the Billboard R&B Albums Chart, #2 on the Top R&B / Hip Hop Albums Chart and #5 on the Billboard 200 Chart, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Debuting with 101, 000 units total consumption, also a record for the musician, this marks Gambino’s second top 10 debut following 2013’s because the internet. Gambino will make his debut performance from the album tomorrownight on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
“Awaken, My Love!” is a sonic evolution which follows the genre blending STN MTN / Kauai mixtape and the Grammy nominated because the internet. Both critics and fellow musicians have applauded the new album. The New Yorker wrote, “[Awaken, My Love!] is an ode to the fantastical funk of the seventies… Heavy on distortion and on long, swirling tangents, the record recalls an ostentatious era of weirdness in pop music,” while Pharrell explained on The Breakfast Club, “His album is genius.” Many artists like George Clinton, Questlove, Usher, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Nick Murphy and more have shared their enthusiasm and support for Gambino and the record’s distinctive sound.
With 30 million streams to date, the album’s lead single ‘Redbone’ reached #1 on Spotify’s Global Viral 50 Chart this past week and has reached the top #5 on the Viral 50 Chart in the U.S., UK, Australia, Brazil, Canada and more. Currently receiving support from six U.S. radio formats, ‘Redbone’ is also being added to the BBC Radio 1 Playlist in the U.K. this week.
