CEO Derek Ting On How TextNow Changes Mobile Communication

When traveling abroad, one of the decisions you most likely find yourself making is what to do with your cell phone. Do you opt into a roaming plan with your carrier? Do you rent a cell phone upon arriving? Do you turn off your phone’s data and only use it when in a wi-fi zone? When pondering those questions, you are bound to find yourself considering the pros and cons of each option.

A great solution to that common situation comes from the app known as TextNow. An app that allows users to call and text loved ones at home at little to no cost, TextNow does not require a contract. It also has no hidden fees, offering a variety of pricing options. Users can simply download the TextNow app — on their smartphone and/or tablet — and use it to stay connected across all of their devices.

Ultimately, TextNow is the first ever full-service freemium wireless company offering a phone number untethered from carriers or any individual device. A software company in a carrier world, TextNow is not bound by an expensive physical infrastructure. Its patented Elastic Calling technology automatically picks the right network between WiFi, LTE, or 2/3/4G service, switching networks mid-communication. This ensures that TextNow-enabled devices work in many places where traditional wireless phones often wonā€™t, like a basement, as long as they have wi-fi readily available.

“At TextNow, we are looking for ways that people can get more from their phone number,” TextNow CEO Derek Ting told me on behalf of The Hype Magazine. Ting added: “We hear all the time from users that the app is a lifesaver for international travel. Anywhere they get a wi-fi signal, they can make calls, check voicemail, and send and receive messages — for free.”

Ting further rationalized why TextNow is needed by regular travelers. “Everyone needs a phone number. Studies show that 21 percent of Americans spend more on their cell phones every month than they do on groceries. We think that’s nuts!” Reiterating the strength of the company behind TextNow, he continued: “Because we’re software first, we can offer wifi-based service for free, and wireless plans for every budget, including a truly unlimited plan for under $40/month.”
