A Q&A With Zero Theorem’s Caesar

Zero Theorem is a new find for me but I’m loving their high-energy music and surreal sound. Their style has been called science fiction influenced which according to band member Caesar “reflects the reality of the moment.”

Special kudos for their new hit Joke which appears on their just-released EP The Killing II…to put it plain and simple, this joint goes hard.

The Hype Magazine got Caesar to weigh in on a few things

From the outside looking in – describe the Zero Theorem crew!

First, I’m highly fortunate to work with such great people.  The ZT crew could be described as a mixture of hilarious oddities and serious professionalism.  We’re constantly making jokes and waxing philosophical about some of life’s biggest challenges, so it’s an entertaining and stimulating environment to be in.

Was there a defining moment that pulled you all together as a collective?

In regard to our current lineup, the first week of practice was especially fun, and we immediately formed a bond.  Typically, anyone who joins the team quickly understands that we are a close unit.

Your music has been described as science fiction influenced but it also manages to touch on real social issues, what is the driving force behind your music?

I think a lot of science fiction reflects the reality of the moment.  In addition to being an escape, the genre has the potential to be both prescient and immediately impactful, especially given the extent to which our technology continues to influence us.  Much of what we are writing lyrically is designed to have multiple meanings.

Where do you look to take listeners with your music?

I’d say the core of the project is about catharsis, reflection, and comradery.  Ultimately, the destination depends on the individual listener.

Talk about your experience working with producer Kane Churko…  What was your greatest takeaway from your work with Kane?

I’m a huge fan of Kane both personally and professionally.  He has tremendous talent and consistently helps to clarify and build upon our ideas.  We’re currently working on some newer material with him, and I’m excited about what we may do next.

COVID affected everyone and is still wreaking havoc…how have you all dealt with the pandemic?

I think it’s been important to maintain some sense of normalcy when possible.  Obviously, the pandemic has greatly affected the music industry, among many other aspects of life, and it’s been difficult without the opportunity to tour.  We’ve all been focusing on different things, whether it’s other jobs, home maintenance, music lessons, writing, or spending time with immediate family.

Tell us about your current project The Killing II EP and what it means for you

This EP is the conclusion of a two-part installment, which was originally conceived as a larger album.  There is a thematic thread that runs through both parts, but this EP represents more of a shift in sound as we’ve continued to explore different methods and textures.  I believe we’re still just getting started with respect to pushing certain boundaries and defining the overall sound of the band.

What about this project is different from previous works?

This collection continues to point forward and widen the overall approach, whereas the previous one was arguably more a continuation of our debut EP, Ataraxis.

I understand you have a tour set for May of this year, COVID willing, what do you enjoy most about being on the road?

Playing live and connecting with fans in person is a distinctly unique and gratifying experience.  You really can’t replicate it any other way.  One of my favorite parts is debuting new material.

What’s the most important thing we need to know about Zero Theorem?

By far, the most important thing about ZT is the fans.  We truly appreciate each and every one of you.

Anything else you might want to cover that I neglected?

I’d just like to say a huge thank you to all our supporters thus far, and I can’t wait to keep sharing what we have coming down the pipeline.

What’s been your craziest “WTF” moment thus far in your career?

It’s hard to say anything has been crazier than 2020 in general, but on a more positive note, our show with Nonpoint at the House of Blues in Orlando was definitely a highlight!
