The Beaches On The New “Future Lovers” EP, Working With Producer Jacknife Lee, Canada, Hard Rock & Going To The Beach

Named after the Toronto neighborhood they all hail and hang in, The Beaches is a wonderful Canada-based rock band with 1970s aesthetics and an often-anthemic modern rock sound. Comprised of sisters Jordan and Kylie Miller (on lead vocals/bass and guitar), Eliza Enman-McDaniel (on drums), and Leandra Earl (on keys and guitar), the band has become one of Canada’s top acts with a global reach. 2017 saw the release of The Beaches’ major label debut, Late Show, as produced by Metric’s Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw. The album’s first single, “Money,” secured the #1 spot for 3 consecutive weeks and the infectious track “T-Shirt” — which spent 9 weeks on the Billboard Rock Chart — recently became Gold-Certified in Canada. Opening tour spots for The Rolling Stones and Foo Fighters would follow, as would praise from Elton John, and a 2018 Juno for “Breakthrough Group Of The Year.”

The latest release from The Beaches is the EP, Future Lovers, as released this month via Universal Music Canada. Produced by long-time collaborator Jacknife Lee and written by all 5 band members, Lee and Coco Morier, Future Lovers was initially recorded in Los Angeles during sessions for the band’s 2019 release The Professional. In the words of frontwoman Jordan Miller: “The pandemic gave us the opportunity to look at some of these songs and give them some new Beaches twists before they were released… We’ve kind of all matured a little being stuck at home for over a year.”

On May 26, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with all 4 members of The Beaches via Zoom, as embedded below. Besides Future Lovers, we spoke about the band’s musical roots, differences between Canada and the United States, future plans, whether all of the members of the band actually enjoy going to the beach, and more. Additional information on The Beaches, Future Lovers and upcoming tour dates can be found by clicking here, here, here and here.
