Movie Review: Escape Room Tournament of Champions

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions is the Adam Robitel-directed sequel to the box office hit psychological thriller that terrified audiences around the world. In this installment, six people unwittingly find themselves locked in another series of escape rooms, slowly uncovering what they have in common to survive…and discovering they’ve all played the game before.

In a seemingly intentional play by the designers of the puzzle, the Escape Room alumni become trapped underground during a treacherous subway ride. I was taken back by the constant intensity of the film, based on a story by Christine Lavaf & Fritz Bohm with a screenplay by Will Honley and Maria Melnik & Daniel Tuch and Oren Uziel. Crafted into a gripping adrenaline rush that didn’t let up, the film kept me on the edge of my seat from the moment I sat down to its unexpected ending. I love a great psycho thriller, and Escape Room: Tournament of Champions was the mid-summer heart-pounding rush I didn’t know I needed.

I was also struck by the complexities of the puzzles these clever stars were expected to solve. Starring Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Indya Moore, Holland Roden, Thomas Cocquerel and Carlito Olivero, the movie was a fast-paced roller-coaster ride of mystery. I only wished for more horror elements and gore, but this isn’t a chainsaw movie and it’s PG-13. Instead, it will bend perceptions of what is real and test how cruel these puzzles can be. The lead female star Taylor Russell’s impassioned performance definitely make her a star to watch.

Pay attention closely, everything could be a clue.
