NJ’s First Youth-Focused Trauma Recovery Center has Opened in Newark

The HUBB Arts & Trauma Center in Newark has opened New Jersey’s first youth-focused trauma recovery center in Newark. The center will serve people who may not have access to mental health services but are more likely to experience trauma through violence and suffer its lasting consequences.

“Mayor Ras Baraka designated Newark a trauma-informed city because violence has had such a powerful impact on my community, and the approach is working,” said Al-Tariq Best, founder of The HUBB Arts & Trauma Center and member of the Equal Justice USA Trauma & Healing Network. “I want to make sure that all young people affected by violence, including survivors and those who have harmed others, can address their trauma and then “Live For Something” meaningful.”

The HUBB Arts & Trauma Center is located at 135 Prince Street in Newark.

The HUBB Arts & Trauma Center (The HUBB) has been serving the families and youth of Newark and its surrounding communities since 2006, using entertainment, education, and empowerment techniques to strengthen health and well-being, and improve academic outcomes.

Equal Justice USA (EJUSA) is a national organization that works to transform the justice system by promoting responses to violence that break cycles of trauma. We work at the intersection of criminal justice, public health, and racial justice to elevate healing over retribution, meet the needs of survivors, advance racial equity, and build community safety.

The leader of The HUBB Arts & Trauma Center … Al-Tariq Best … is also a Hip Hop artist whose music captures the experience of living with violence and trauma, while also offering inspiration and answers.
