Cinema Libre Studio Premieres ‘I Am Gitmo’ at CLSNOW Launch and Human Rights Award Ceremony

Cinema Libre Studio unveiled the powerful film “I Am Gitmo” on May 2, 2024, at the esteemed Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills, CA. The event marked the inauguration of the CLSNOW streaming platform and featured the presentation of the CLSNOW Human Rights Award.

Premiere and Theatrical Release

I Am Gitmo” began to touch audiences at the Laemmle Monica Film Center in Santa Monica, CA, on May 3 with its theatrical debut, following a successful premiere in New York City. Inspired by true events, the film chronicles the gripping saga of a Muslim educator caught in the aftermath of 9/11. Abducted and transported to a CIA black site, then later to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, he endures relentless interrogation and abuse while steadfastly asserting his innocence.

Production and Cast

Director Philippe Diaz helmed the independent feature, shot over four weeks across seven Southern California studio locations. The ensemble cast includes Sammy Sheik, Eric Pierpoint, Paul Kampf, Jason Reid, Chico Brown, Sean O’Bryan, and Eric St. John, with costume designs by Michelle Stokes. Notably, former Crips and Bloods members participated in both construction and on-screen roles as part of Cinema Libre’s Diversity initiative.

Message and Impact

“I Am Gitmo” offers a unique perspective from within the prison walls, shedding light on the plight of the 30 individuals still detained at Guantanamo Bay without charge. The film aims to evoke empathy and provoke discourse on America’s use of torture during the “war on terror.” Cinema Libre Studio remains dedicated to stimulating dialogue and inspiring action, contributing $10,000 to the Guantanamo Survivors Fund.

Celebrity Hosts and Award Presentation

Fox Sports broadcaster Mike Hill emceed the evening, which included the bestowal of the CLSNOW Human Rights Award upon Fionnuala D. Ní Aoláin, former UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Counterterrorism. Actor Thomas Jane, renowned for his portrayal of Marvel’s Punisher, had the privilege of presenting the esteemed award to Ní Aoláin, the first UN investigator granted access to Guantanamo Bay by the US government.

Attendees and Q&A Session

A diverse array of personalities graced the happening, including the film’s director and cast, along with industry figures and influencers. The evening concluded with a thought-provoking Q&A session moderated by journalist Jeremy Kuzmarov, featuring key figures from the film.

Culinary Experience and Charity

This happening featured a silent auction of artwork created by Guantanamo prisoners, organized in collaboration with the nonprofit heART. Guests savored a culinary extravaganza curated by Nikita Leone of Italian Soul Catering, complemented by fine wines and champagne courtesy of Field Wine. Champagne was provided by Michelle Stokes of Clinch Entertainment, with vodka from 1.0.1 Ultra Premium Vodka.
