Brandon Boyd On His New Single “Pocket Knife,” The Moonlight Arts Collective, Future Projects & More

Brandon Boyd is an accomplished multi-disciplinary artist, having worked as a painter, author, game-designer, philanthropist, songwriter and vocalist beyond his Incubus duties. His new solo single “Pocket Knife” combines his talents, with the evocative single art painted by Boyd and the song co-written by Boyd and producer John Congleton (Sigur Ros, Phoebe Bridgers, Lana Del Ray). “Pocket Knife” will be part of Boyd’s upcoming album Echoes & Cocoons, as scheduled for a Spring 2022 release via Wit Hustle / The Orchard, with at least one single set for release before the end of 2021.

“Pocket Knife” and Echoes & Cocoons work aside, 2021 also saw Boyd found the Moonlight Arts Collective. A community of art enthusiasts who appreciate the creative output of cultural icons who “moonlight” as visual artists, this collective features Boyd’s paintings, in addition to those of friends like Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo) and actresses Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development), Melissa Villaseñor (Saturday Night Live) and Heart Evangelista (I Left My Heart In Sorsogon), and noted photographer Brian Bowen Smith. The previous year, Incubus had released the long-awaited Trust Fall (Side B) EP.

On December 9, 2021, I had the pleasure of speaking with Brandon Boyd again, this time via Zoom and embedded below; our previous conversation was in 2017 during a Live Nation junket. Beyond “Pocket Knife” and Echoes & Cocoons, we spoke about the Moonlight Arts Collective, musical influences, Boyd’s hobbies and aspirations outside of music, future plans, Van Halen and more. Additional information on Boyd and his various creative endeavors can be found by clicking here, here and here.
