Rising Indie EMO Artist Dog Drops Most Personal Single Yet Released with Cleopatra Records + 3D Animated Music Video

Our music discovery trip continues with a brand new artist for us named Dog…I’m not really up on the EMO side of things but I know somebody special when I hear them:

Genre-defying indie artist Dog gets inside his head in his latest single, “Within.” The intimate single sees Dog opening up in lyrics that reveal the hardships he faced in his journey to becoming the face-tattooed popstar he is today. Influenced by hip hop, indie-pop, and emo music, “Within” is a revealing look into the mind of the West Coast up-and-comer.

Live instrumentals merge with electronic production in the track, which is written, performed, and created by Dog. “I thought it would be cool to have a shoegaze-sounding, Explosions In The Sky-type melody with hip-hop-inspired machine drums,” he says of the track. Assisted by guitarist Adrian Wiggins, Dog created “Within” in Logic and added the magnetic guitar riff, along with underground hip hop elements that give Dog his distinct sound.

The accompanying music video plays upon these themes of childhood and self-exploration, with animated characters drawn by artist Coco Paluck (@cocopaluck69) co-founder of upcycled clothing brand Tobangus and illustrator of her own comics and zines. These characters were then animated by Isabella Gonzalez (@fu_kyoursadface), using Blender. Gomez has created projects for Madison Beer and Yeat and began her collaborative relationship with Dog on his “Suicide” video. Converging together as one, the video explores the DIY aesthetics of Dog’s music while emphasizing his playful, self-aware approach to his music.

“Within” is available across all major streaming platforms. The single released on Cleopatra Records, an independent record label founded in 1992 by Brian Perera. The Los Angeles-based label encourages artists to experiment with genre and has played a key role in ushering in the second wave of gothic and industrial music. They follow this tradition of breaking boundaries in music with Dog’s latest release, which crosses genres and styles to form a sound uniquely his own.
