Alice Merton On Her New Album “S.I.D.E.S.,” Future Plans, Life As An Independent Artist & More

With over 1 billion total global streams to her credit, “No Roots” proved to be a debut break-through single for Alice Merton, also selling over 1 million units and gaining nearly 1 million creations on TikTok. Ultimately, Merton’s debut EP in 2018 led her to being the #4 most Shazamed Artist that year. Over the past 4 years, Merton has found success all over the world, and her credits include appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, LIVE! With Kelly and Ryan, The Late Late Show with James Corden, and Good Day NY, beyond working as a judge on the German version of The Voice.

Earlier this month, Alice Merton — previously deemed an “Artist You Need To Know” by Rolling Stone — released her second album S.I.D.E.S. which includes the focus track “The Other Side.” The singles that helped preview the album — including “Vertigo,” “Same Team” and “Island” — saw Merton make a huge leap forward in both her artistic vision and her confidence. The voice and alt-pop addictiveness that first enamored fans remains at the core of her sound, but the album is also adventurously-doused with touches of indie, electronica, alt-rock and synth-pop. It is also the first studio-helmed release for which Merton has acted as the executive producer throughout its creative process.

On June 24, 2022, I had the pleasure of speaking with Alice Merton via Zoom, as embedded below. More on Merton and S.I.D.E.S. can be found online by clicking here, here, here, here and here.
