Kenny Loggins On His New “Still Alright” Memoir Via Hachette, Future Goals, Yacht Rock & More
Musician Kenny Loggins first made waves internationally with Loggins & Messina — one of the best-selling musical duos of the 1970s — releasing 6 studio albums between 1971 and 1976, plus 3 live albums and 4 compilations. Beyond those 16 million units sold with Loggins & Messina, Loggins has released 14 solo records with more than 25 million albums sold, yielding 5 Top 10 singles and winning 2 Grammy Awards. Loggins has also been an in-demand songwriter for outside projects (e.g. The Doobie Brothers’ “What A Fool Believes,” “I’m Alright” for Caddyshack, the title song to Footloose), and his environmentally-minded song “Conviction Of The Heart” made him an Emmy Award Winner.
But Kenny Loggins has dealt with plenty of challenges over the years, personally and professionally. He chronicles this within his new memoir Still Alright — as co-written with Jason Turbow — giving fans a candid and entertaining perspective on his life and career. Altogether, Loggins draws readers back to the musical eras they have loved, while also addressing 2 marriages that ended in divorce, his difficult relationship with the older brother for which “Danny’s Song” is named, struggles with benzodiazepines, the revelations of turning 70, and coming to terms how his rock-star persona varies from his true self.
Still Alright memoir aside, Kenny Loggins remains an in-demand touring act. Directly related to the book, he will be appearing at New York City’s Town Hall on June 16, 2022 and at Santa Rosa, California’s Luther Burbank Center For The Arts on June 30, 2022. These shows are billed as Still Alright: An Intimate Evening Of Stories & Songs and will include a stripped-down set. Next month, Loggins will performing full-band gigs alongside Jim Messina on July 15 and 16, 2022 at Los Angeles’ iconic Hollywood Bowl, celebrating the 50th anniversary of their first Hollywood Bowl show.
On May 31, 2022, I had the pleasure of speaking with Kenny Loggins via Zoom, as embedded below. Beyond Still Alright, we discussed his upcoming tour dates, the “yacht rock” genre, future career goals, and yes, Van Halen. More on Loggins and Still Alright can be found by clicking here, here and here.
