The Roughhousers on Their Visuals for Single ‘Azucar’

Grey DeLisle, the iconic voice actress known for her roles as ‘Vicky’ from “The Fairly OddParents,” ‘Mandy’ from “The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy,” and ‘Daphne’ from Scooby-Doo, is bringing her talents to the stage with the bubbly band The Roughhousers. The band also features Eddie Clendening who is one of rock & roll’s most in-demand artists and has worked with greats like Scotty Moore, James Burton, and Pat Cupp. Together the two have created an unstoppable force of playful and eclectic tracks that feel like a breezy summer’s day. They describe themselves as a “kid band for adults,” bringing youthful energy with a rockabilly flair. They could very well be pioneering a brand new genre. The Roughhousers are curating a playlist that is essential for today’s youth and will have both the kids and parents dancing to the beat.

Grey DeLisle’s voice shaped the childhood of millions and now she’s ready to bring the magic to the next generation through her music. The sticky, sweet anthem “Azucar” is all about our favorite guilty pleasure: desserts. Chocolate and vanilla ice cream, jelly beans, frosty root beers, galore! The talented singer pens a wondrous tune, while Eddie Clendening brings a bouncy instrumental that will have you craving more. The video captures the playful energy of the song and the spirit of Grey DeLisle’s career puts the two artists in an animated candy shop. The easy strumming and fun melodies are catchy and easy on the ears. Try a taste of “Azucar” and see what The Roughhousers are all about!

The Hype Magazine got the crew to weigh in on a few things

Tell us about your musical journey, how did The Roughhousers come to be?

I got a crush on the little circular picture of Eddie on Facebook during the lockdown and made-up some weird excuse to message him. I’m shallow and extremely smooth. We turned out to have a ton of friends in common and very similar musical taste. At the time I was home-schooling my 3 kids and trying to make up funny songs on my autoharp to keep them entertained during “Mama’s Music Class”! They were laughing so hard and begging for more and it was really surprising! I realized how little kid-directed music they had heard in their lifetimes. I mostly just played things like Johnny Cash, Dolly & The Beatles for them because I just couldn’t stomach most music written for children. Eddie suggested we meet up and start a band for kids that adults wouldn’t hate!

How would you describe your sound and genre? What makes it different from the mainstream?

We both grew up spending a lot of time with our grandmas. Mine used to sing with Tito Puente in her youth and she had EXCELLENT taste. She’d let me bust out her old vinyl and it was just so exciting as a kid to drop that needle and get that rush of beautiful music in my eardrums. I’d spend my days laying next to the big brown speaker in our apartment and being transported to a more glamorous time and place! Billy Holiday, Keely Smith, Vicente Fernandez, Stan Getz, Freddy Fender….

I think we want to expose kids to some of that good older stuff we were lucky enough to grow up with!

Who are some of your musical inspirations? How have you curated your sound through the years?

Eddie knows almost everything about EVERY notable musician from 1930 to 1960! He’s like a walking Google for that stuff! I’ve tried to stump him with some REALLY obscure acts and he’ll come back with some weird detail about them! It’s eerie. I’m a sucker for anything produced by Billy Sherrill or Owen Bradley….Phil Spector. Those big, dramatic, “Wall of Sound” productions are so magical to me. We both also love a clever lyric. Sometimes I’ll write one that I’m pretty sure will go over everybody’s head….but nothing gets past Eddie’s pompadour!

What was it like shooting the video for “Azucar”? What is the process of bringing your creative vision to life through video?

Our video director, Neuman Mannas, is such a blast to work with! He’s a writer and phenomenal guitarist ( he fronts a band called The Matchstick Skeletons) in his own right and he’s always been so supportive of us and our music. Everyone was off the road during Covid so initially he was just showing up to the studio to hang and take a few pictures…then he started bringing his video camera and editing together these incredible “behind the scenes” videos for us! So when the subject of ACTUAL music videos came up, we called him! It was so much fun goofing around with all of the weird props at the greenscreen studio! We shot ALL ELEVEN VIDEOS in 2 DAYS! It didn’t even feel like work! We couldn’t believe the end results! I hope the sense of fun translates to the viewers because fun was most certainly being HAD!
