This TikTok Curator Interviewed Travis Scott’s Mom Unknowingly

Over the past couple of years, TikTok has quickly grown to become a vital resource in the music industry and beyond. TikTok has become somewhat of a rule-bending platform and has largely contributed to the latest major shit in the music landscape. Nowadays, artists can break a song on their own using the platform, and TikTok curators like Nicolas Nuvan serve a similar function as blogs in the ‘blog era.’

Nicolas Nuvan isn’t just any TikTok curator; his background and approach are significantly different than that of his curator contemporaries. In the early days of his music curation career, he was known as “the person who asked people ‘what’s your favorite song,’” and has since grown his brand outward to ask more open-ended questions about people’s music taste so that they can tell an uninterrupted story. Their story. Nicolas has a pure love of people, and it shows.

Nicolas started off by making food-related content on TikTok. He had a couple of somewhat-viral videos, but he was looking for something better. His sister recommended that he try out the “what song are you listening to” approach after they came across a video on YouTube (this video was the first time the format was posted online). On Nicolas’ first attempt, he hit gold and had a clear winner. He continued that same tactic for a bit, interviewing three-to-four people per video, and then graduated to just one person for each video (along with a wider variety of questions).

In one of his latest videos, Nicolas was interviewing a woman in New Orleans whose favorite song is “Butterfly Effect.” While it seemed like a relatively normal interview at first, it’d become much more than that after he posted it. Soon after, a fan commented on the video, noting that this interviewee was none other than Wanda Webster, Travis’ mom.

Even though this occurrence was random, it is the exact type of excitement Nicolas’ followers have come to expect. It’s just one of many gems found in his catalog of over 760 videos in this format (and counting).
